Silent Retreat in Georgia (the Country): Where and How to Run One in 2026

← Back to the blog

Published 30 October 202619 min readPrices and facts checked: October 2026

Georgia has no permanent silent retreat centre: Vipassana runs free 10-day courses in Bakuriani each autumn, and a few teachers hold silent weeks at rented venues. To run your own, book a venue one group can take over completely, such as Glamping Tago in mountainous Adjara with up to 33 people on site.

A silent retreat depends on one thing the teacher cannot control: who else is on the property. Georgia has no permanent silent retreat centre, so every silent course here, Vipassana included, runs at a rented site. That makes the venue the whole question.

This guide covers the silent retreats you can join in 2026 and 2027, what a venue has to give you for noble silence, which venues in which regions one group can really take over, what it costs, and how to run the week from the first enquiry to the last morning.

Which venue fits a silent retreat in Georgia?

Pick a place you can book whole, where everyone sleeps on site and where there is a covered hall big enough to sit in for eight hours. These are the venues that pass that test, and the big hotels that do not.

Glamping Tago (our venue), Adjara

  • Where: on the ridge above Village Tago, Khulo municipality, mountainous Adjara, at about 1,200 m.
  • Drive: about 2.5 hours from Batumi by private 4x4; the last 8.9 km from Khulo is a 4x4 road.
  • Capacity: up to 33 people sleep on site, in 12 Lotus tents for two and the nine-bed Half Dome.
  • Price from (2026): the whole camp from 1,962 GEL a night in April, up to 4,488 GEL in July and August, plus 100 GEL per person per day for three vegetarian meals (retreats page).
  • Season: 1 April to the end of October.

We have run silence at both ends of the scale. In August 2026 more than 100 people spent six nights in meditation with their teacher, with days of silence and every morning silent: the whole glamping, the village guesthouses and a camping area, the sailcloth tent as the meditation hall and a raw vegan kitchen. In October 2026 the Russian-language Metta.Land group held a four-night Thai village-style vipassana here for up to ten people, and in August a 16-woman yoga retreat kept one full day of silence.

Book the whole camp. On a partial booking two groups can share the site and individual guests can stay alongside you; only a whole-camp booking keeps everyone else out.

What is a silent retreat, and what does noble silence actually mean?

A silent retreat is a residential course where participants stop talking for most or all of the days, with meditation filling the schedule. Noble silence, the term Vipassana uses, means silence of body, speech and mind: no gestures, no sign language and no written notes between students, from the start of the course until the morning of the last full day (Vipassana code of discipline).

The heated dome takes 10 to 12 people for cold early sittings

Silence still has exits. Participants talk to the teacher in short interview slots, usually once or twice a day, and to the course manager about practical needs; everything else goes in writing, and the teacher eases talking back in at the end (Retreat Vacation). Couples and friends keep silence with each other too.

Four formats run under the same name:

  • Tradition intensive, 10 days or more, with a bell at 4:00 to 4:30. Vipassana is the best-known example: 10 to 11 hours of meditation and bed at about 21:30.
  • Secular mindfulness, 3 to 7 days, usually waking at 6:00 to 7:00 with talks and walking practice (BookRetreats).
  • Yoga with silence, 3 to 7 days, silent during practice and meals, with some social time.
  • Nature-based, 2 to 5 days, silent during practice blocks and walks.

Which silent retreats can you join in Georgia in 2026-2027?

Three kinds: the free 10-day Vipassana courses in Bakuriani each autumn, small teacher-led silent weeks at rented venues (Metta.Land in Tago, Zen Georgia on the Adjara coast), and almost nothing on the big retreat marketplaces. Our meditation retreat guide covers the non-silent options.

Vipassana Georgia, Bakuriani

Vipassana Georgia has no centre of its own and runs its courses at a rented site. In 2026 its 10-day courses ran in Bakuriani in September and October, the last one from 20 to 31 October, with instructions in English and Russian. The official schedule lists no 2027 course yet; watch it from early summer.

  • Length: registration on day one between 14:00 and 16:00, ten full days, departure by 07:30 on day eleven. Plan 12 calendar days with travel.
  • Silence: noble silence for the first nine full days; speech returns on day ten (Vipassana Q&A).
  • Day: wake-up bell at 4:00, lunch at 11:00, tea at 17:00, evening discourse 19:00 to 20:15, lights out at 21:30.
  • Rules: men and women are completely separated, couples included. Phones and smartwatches are handed in until the end; no books, no writing, no music. Food is simple and vegetarian, and returning students eat nothing after midday.
  • Cost: nothing. Teaching, food and bed are paid by donations, which are accepted only from people who have finished a 10-day course.
  • Applying: online; the reply can take up to two weeks, and you then confirm your place.

Bakuriani sits at about 1,700 m. Nights drop to about 8°C in September and about 3°C in October, so pack thermal layers and a hat for the early sittings.

Metta.Land: village vipassana in Tago

Metta.Land ran a Thai village-style vipassana from 16 to 20 October 2026 in Tago: four nights, up to ten participants plus a cook, a volunteer and the teacher, taught in Russian. Shared costs were 250 to 260 EUR per person (rent, food, transfers, firewood, cushions) plus a donation to the teacher. The day starts at 5:00, practice at 6:00, breakfast 8:30, lunch 12:30, tea at 18:00, no dinner and lights out at 21:30. Phones go in at the opening ceremony, and participants give their families the manager's number for emergencies.

Zen Georgia: the December sesshin at Tsikhisdziri

Zen Georgia holds a Soto Zen sesshin from 17 to 20 December 2026 at Tsikhisdziri on the Adjara coast. The 300 GEL organising fee covers accommodation and meals for the three days and is paid in two parts. Gadgets are set aside and idle talk is avoided, with work periods, mindful eating and walking, but it is not strict: the organiser's own page mentions socialising, workshops and sometimes concerts. Contact runs through Timofey on Telegram or WhatsApp; the dojo is at 8 Giorgi Mazniashvili St in Tbilisi, with a group at 61 Bagrationi St in Batumi. December on the coast means nights of about 6°C, days of about 12°C and rain on about 14 days of the month, so bring rain gear.

What the marketplaces list

The BookRetreats silent retreats page for Georgia lists no silent retreat in the country: its results are in Romania, the Netherlands and Spain. On its Vipassana page the only Georgian listing is a 5-day Tsa Lung breathwork retreat near Gudauri, 19 to 23 December 2026, for at most four people, from US$489. The other Georgian listings are meditation, yoga or detox weeks, not silent ones.

Gomarduli Dao Space in Shuakhevi, which used to sell 7-day no-talking, no-phone retreats from Batumi, has closed for good.

What does a silent retreat need from a venue?

One group on the whole site, beds for everyone on site, a hall you can sit in for eight hours in any weather, and a team that knows what silence means. Everything else is detail.

  1. The whole venue, in writing. At shared venues the silence breaks in the dining room, where other guests and the staff talk freely. Families booked on the same dates ask us whether they may talk among themselves and how to order food; nobody enjoys that week. Put "no other guests" in the contract.
  2. No events. No weddings, birthdays, karaoke or spa day passes for outside visitors on your dates. Panorama Kakheti, for example, sells itself on the region's largest indoor spa and its spaces for weddings and celebrations: a good resort, the wrong one for silence.
  3. Everyone sleeps on site. No shuttles between hotels and no walks through a village to breakfast.
  4. A hall for the whole group and a warm room. It has to be rainproof and heatable for a 5:00 sitting in autumn.
  5. Meals that run without words. Buffet service, fixed times, the menu written up, diets collected before arrival. Vegetarian food is the norm.
  6. Separate sleeping areas if you follow Vipassana rules. A past Georgian Vipassana course near Kojori used a whole rented hotel for about 60 people, with men and women in separate buildings, separate rest areas and separate meal times (course account).
  7. A phone box and one emergency number. Phones go in at check-in; families get the manager's number. At Glamping Tago the camp has Starlink wifi, so switching off is a group rule, not a matter of signal.
  8. A written silence brief for the venue team. Staff need to know whether silence means no talking at all or a quieter tone, and from which session it starts. Venue teams ask for this every time.
  9. Walking space inside the boundaries. Vipassana students stay inside the course area and walk only where it is marked.
  10. The sounds you cannot switch off. A silent venue in Bali warns guests about frogs, village ceremonies and chainsaws. In Tago, the call to prayer from the village mosque carries across the village: build it into the schedule as a bell rather than fight it.

Where in Georgia does silence work best, region by region?

In mountain venues you can book whole, away from day-trippers: upper Adjara first, then small estates in Kakheti and a few venues near Tbilisi and in Samegrelo. Kazbegi and Gudauri have the views, but mostly big shared hotels.

Adjara: the mountains above Batumi (and the coast)

  • Pros: whole-site venues in the mountains; Tago is about 2.5 hours from Batumi and Merisi 52 km from Batumi; vegetable dishes such as pkhali and lobio make a vegetarian retreat menu easy; September and October are the quietest months in the villages.
  • Cons: rain on 11 to 16 days a month in the mountains, so the hall must be covered; the last 8.9 km to Tago is a 4x4 road; Tago closes from November to March; far from Tbilisi.

Eco House Merisi sits up the Merisi side valley in Keda, about 52 km from Batumi, with glass cottages, villas and a panoramic restaurant. Its own wedding page offers a full hotel buyout ("only you and your guests"), dinner for up to 60 and beds for 54 in 12 cottages and 3 villas. Without a buyout it is a busy hotel and restaurant that also hosts weddings and birthdays, so a silent group needs the buyout in writing. From the Batumi-Tago road it is a separate trip: a 23 km detour.

For a silent walk to a holy place, Skhalta Monastery stands in the Skhalta valley, a 13.5 km detour from the Batumi-Tago road through Khulo but right on the valley road that group minibuses take to Tago. It is open 9:00 to 19:00, busiest on weekend afternoons and quietest on Tuesdays and on Wednesday and Friday mornings, the time for a silent visit. Call before you drive up, as the church is sometimes locked.

On the coast, Tsikhisdziri hosts the Zen Georgia sesshin in December.

Kakheti: small estates you can take over

  • Pros: small estates that become private above a set number of cottages; Horizons is 1.5 hours from Tbilisi; open all year.
  • Cons: the region's big resorts share their halls and restaurants with other hotel guests; far from the Batumi and Kutaisi airports.

Horizons Bakurtsikhe has the clearest rule in the country: book 4 or more of its 6 cottages and the entire venue is yours, with no outside guests. The whole site costs from 2,715 GEL a night including VAT and breakfast, 10% less for two nights, with vegetarian meals as an add-on, a yoga terrace, a pool and a sauna.

Duende has five treehouse cottages in the forest at Khiza village near Lagodekhi, each with a fire pit, a cold plunge by day and a hot tub by night. It runs its own coaching-based solitude and semi-solitude retreats and hosts private retreats, and reviewers name the river as the only noise. For a buyout price and the maximum group size, ask Duende directly.

Kakheti's big resorts are good hotels and the wrong kind of venue: Kvareli Lake Resort has 100 rooms and conference halls shared with other guests.

For a silent day out, the Bodbe convent near Sighnaghi asks visitors to keep silence and speak quietly on the grounds. It is open 10:00 to 18:00, with no photos or video inside the churches. In any church, women wear a skirt below the knee, covered shoulders and a headscarf, and men wear long trousers (Sakhva Travel).

Around Tbilisi

The closest forest quiet to the capital is in Kojori, above the city. Bioli Wellness Resort has glass cabins in the forest, but it is a resort shared with other guests and restaurant visitors, and two October 2026 reviews say most facilities cost extra. Kiketi Farm, 30 minutes from Tbilisi, runs public yoga and sound healing on weekends: a day visit, not a silent stay.

Kazbegi and Gudauri

The views draw retreats here, but most beds are in large shared hotels. Rooms Kazbegi has a strong long-term rating, yet October 2026 reviews mention a party next door until 3:30 am, barking dogs and tour groups, and its last-12-month average is 3.9. Zen Travel's 7-day Kazbegi week at Suatis Resort (EUR 2,180 shared) includes silent morning sittings but is not a silent retreat.

Samegrelo

Le Jardin des Zomes in Chkaduashi near Zugdidi has a 65 m² wooden zome for practice, 5 rooms plus tents, rooms from EUR 50 per person per day and exclusive hire on request (Retreatorium). The host teaches in French and English. It is small and new on Google Maps, with only a handful of reviews.

How do you run a silent retreat in Georgia, step by step?

Book the venue 6 to 12 months ahead, put the silence rules in writing for the venue team, and settle transfers and departure before the silence starts. In order:

  1. Fix the format. Number of days, how strict (full noble silence, silent mornings or one silent day), group size and teacher. At our camp, groups for June to September book 6 to 12 months ahead.
  2. Shortlist venues you can take whole. Ask each one: other guests on our dates? Any events? Where do the staff sleep? How big is the hall, and is it heated?
  3. Hold the dates. At Glamping Tago 30% of the total holds them, and it is not refundable. The accommodation balance is invoiced with the final numbers 14 days before arrival and paid before you arrive; food and extras are paid at the end of the stay (booking terms).
  4. Send the programme 30 days before and the final headcount in writing 14 days before.
  5. Write the silence brief. When silence starts (Vipassana begins after the first evening sitting, so staff can still talk at check-in), what staff may say, how notes work, meal times, and the one person participants go to.
  6. Screen participants. Collect diets and health information in the application. Vipassana asks people with overwhelming depression, anxiety, panic attacks or PTSD to write before applying, and is clear that a course is not therapy.
  7. Check insurance. Since 1 January 2026 every foreign tourist must show health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL covering the whole stay (Visit Georgia); the Patrol Police check it at the border (Revera).
  8. Book transfers both ways before day one. On departure day the group is talking again, but the luggage car and pick-up times must already be fixed.
  9. Day one: phones into the box, the emergency number to families, house rules read aloud, then the first sitting and silence.
  10. Last morning: open speech gently, then pack, eat and leave.

What does a silent retreat in Georgia cost in 2026?

Joining one costs from nothing (Vipassana runs on donations) to 300 GEL for a three-day sesshin and 250 to 260 EUR for a four-night village vipassana. Running your own at a whole mountain venue costs roughly 500 to 860 GEL per person for three nights with three meals a day, for 24 to 30 people, before the teacher's fee.

When is the best season for a silent retreat in Georgia?

For a mountain venue in Adjara, September to early October or May to early June. Vipassana runs in Bakuriani in September and October, and the Zen sesshin on the coast in December.

A cloud-filled mountain valley and village seen from inside a tent
Autumn mornings at Tago often start in cloud

At Tago, May days usually reach about 19°C with nights of 6 to 9°C, June days about 24°C, and October days about 18°C with nights of 5 to 8°C. It rains on 11 to 16 days a month all season, so the hall must be covered and everyone needs a rain jacket and warm layers for the 5:00 sitting. June to August is our busiest stretch in the camp and the village; September and October are the quietest, which is when silence comes easiest. Glamping Tago is open from 1 April to the end of October.

How do participants get there from Batumi, Kutaisi or Tbilisi?

Tago is 90.9 km from Batumi: the S1 Batumi-Akhaltsikhe road to Khulo, then 8.9 km of 4x4 road up the hill. A private 4x4 from Batumi takes about 2.5 hours and costs 265 GEL per car of up to four people; from Kutaisi it takes 5.5 hours and costs 465 GEL (how to get to Glamping Tago).

  • Marshrutka: from Batumi bus station every 30 minutes, 08:00 to 20:00, about 2.5 hours and about 10 GEL to Khulo. From Khulo our 4x4 taxi takes 30 to 35 minutes and costs 75 GEL per car of up to four.
  • Group minibus: take the Skhalta valley road, the easier way up, turning off the main road at Zamleti; it suits normal cars and minibuses.
  • Parking: with a 4x4 you can park at the camp; without one, park anywhere in Khulo centre and take our 4x4 taxi.
  • From Kutaisi: the marshrutka from Kutaisi bus station to Batumi runs hourly, 08:00 to 18:00, takes 3 hours and costs 20 GEL; from Kutaisi airport a bus takes 2 hours (25 GEL) and a train 2 hours (31 GEL) to Batumi.
  • Cash and supplies: ATMs (Bank of Georgia, Liberty, Credo) and fuel are in Khulo. Tago has no shop and no cafe; the last shop is the 24-hour Spar 100 m from the Khulo station.
Aerial view of white tents along a green ridge with mountains and a village below

To Bakuriani for Vipassana: the suburban train leaves Tbilisi at 06:35 and reaches Borjomi at 10:03 (another leaves at 18:35); the ticket costs 2 GEL and is sold at the station, not online (timetable). From Borjomi it is 30 km and 45 to 60 minutes up to Bakuriani by marshrutka for 5 to 10 GEL (Orbitrip); the old Kukushka mountain train has not run since 2020. A direct marshrutka from Tbilisi's Didube station takes about 3 hours for 15 to 20 GEL, and one from Kutaisi also takes about 3 hours (Bakuriani.ski).

What goes wrong on silent retreats (and how to prevent it)?

Most problems come from the venue, not the practice. These are the ones we see, and the fixes.

Questions people ask

Is there a Vipassana course in Georgia?

Yes. Vipassana Georgia runs donation-based 10-day courses at a rented site; in 2026 its courses ran in Bakuriani in September and October, taught in English and Russian. The 2027 dates are not on the official dhamma.org schedule yet, so check it from early summer and apply as soon as they appear.

How much does a silent retreat in Georgia cost?

Vipassana costs nothing: teaching, food and bed are paid by donations from past students. Zen Georgia's three-day December 2026 sesshin costs 300 GEL with food and beds, and Metta.Land's four nights in Tago cost 250 to 260 EUR plus a donation. Running your own at Glamping Tago costs about 545 GEL per person for three nights with food in April for 24 people.

Where can I hold my own silent retreat in Georgia with no other guests?

At a venue that sells the whole site. Glamping Tago in mountainous Adjara takes up to 33 people on site on a whole-camp booking, Horizons Bakurtsikhe in Kakheti becomes private when you book 4 of its 6 cottages, and Eco House Merisi in Keda offers a full hotel buyout. Big resorts in Kakheti and Kazbegi share their halls and restaurants with other guests.

Can more than 33 people do a silent retreat at Glamping Tago?

Yes. In August 2026 more than 100 people spent six nights in meditation here, with days of silence: the whole glamping, the family guesthouses in the village (64 more beds) and a camping area, with the sailcloth tent as the meditation hall. For a group that size, plan the guesthouse rooms and the walks between them into the silence brief.

Do I have to hand in my phone on a silent retreat?

On Vipassana courses and at Metta.Land, yes: phones and smartwatches are collected at the start and returned at the end, and families get the manager's number for emergencies. On other retreats it is up to the organiser, so ask before you book.

What is the best month for a silent retreat in the Georgian mountains?

September and early October, or May and early June. In Tago, days reach about 18 to 19°C in May and October with cool nights of 5 to 9°C, and September and October are the quietest months in the camp and the village. Mountain venues in Adjara close from November to March.

Is a silent retreat safe if I have anxiety or depression?

Talk to a doctor first. Vipassana is clear that a course is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment and asks people with overwhelming depression, anxiety, panic attacks or PTSD to write before applying. A shorter format with one silent day is a gentler start.

Can I spend a silent day at a Georgian monastery?

Yes. Bodbe convent near Sighnaghi asks visitors to keep silence and speak quietly on its grounds, opens 10:00 to 18:00 and allows no photos or video inside its churches. Women wear a skirt below the knee, covered shoulders and a headscarf, and men long trousers. In Adjara, Skhalta Monastery on the valley road to Tago is quietest on weekday mornings.
