Best Regions in Georgia (the Country) for a Retreat, 2026: Adjara, Kakheti, Kazbegi and More Compared
Published 10 October 202617 min readPrices and facts checked: October 2026
For a summer retreat of 20 to 30 people, choose the mountains: the Adjara mountains (Batumi airport, whole venues you can book alone) or Kazbegi (Tbilisi airport, large shared hotels). Kakheti and the Tbilisi area suit spring and autumn, when the 29-30 C July heat is gone.

Which region of Georgia is best for a retreat?
For a group of 20 to 30 people in summer, the Adjara mountains and Kazbegi are the two regions that stay cool, and only the Adjara mountains give you a whole venue to yourselves within about two hours of an airport. Kakheti and the Tbilisi area are easier to reach from Tbilisi airport but run 29 to 30 C in July, and their retreat-sized venues are mostly large resorts you share with other guests.

Most retreat lists name Kakheti, Kazbegi and the Tbilisi area and stop there. Adjara, in the south-west, has its own international airport in Batumi and quiet mountain valleys one to two hours inland. Here is how the regions compare on the things that decide a retreat.
| Region | Nearest airport and drive | Summer climate | Venues for 20-30 | Between sessions | Months that work |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adjara mountains (Khulo, Keda, Shuakhevi, Goderdzi) | Batumi: 87 km to Tago, 2 to 2.5 hours | Khulo: 23 / 12 C in July | Whole-venue buyout at Glamping Tago (12-33 guests); Eco House Merisi buyout on request | Mountain hikes, Green Lake and Khikhani fortress by jeep, evening sauna | April to October at Tago |
| Adjara coast (Batumi, Kobuleti, Tsikhisdziri) | Batumi: 28 km to Tsikhisdziri | Batumi: 25 / 17 C in July | Large sea-view hotels, shared with other guests | Black Sea, spa pools, Batumi | Wettest in September and October |
| Kakheti (Telavi, Kvareli, Sighnaghi) | Tbilisi: 83 to 140 km, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours | Telavi: 29 / 17 C in July | Resorts of 72 to 310 rooms, shared | Wineries, lakes, Telavi and Sighnaghi | Spring and autumn; July and August are hot |
| Kazbegi (Stepantsminda, Gudauri) | Tbilisi: 170 km, 3 to 3.5 hours | Stepantsminda: 21 / 7 C in July | Large mountain hotels (121 to 155 rooms), shared | Gergeti Trinity, high-mountain hikes | June to September |
| Tbilisi area (Kiketi, Bazaleti) | Tbilisi: 45 to 66 km, about 1 to 1.5 hours | Tbilisi: 30 C by day in July | Kiketi Farm whole-site hire; Laguna Beach Club group packages | Tbilisi city, lake | Spring and autumn |
| Borjomi and Bakuriani | Kutaisi: 160 km; Tbilisi: 189 km to Tsemi | Tsemi at 1,207 m, Bakuriani at 1,700 m | Mountain resorts with halls for 40 to 150 | Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park | Summer hiking, winter skiing in Bakuriani |
| Svaneti, Racha, Tusheti | Kutaisi: 219 km and 5+ hours to Mestia | Mestia: 19 / 7 C in July | Hotels and family guesthouses; few single venues for 20-30 | Towers, glaciers, Ushguli | Tusheti: mid-June to mid-October only |
Which venue fits you?
If you want one place where the whole group sleeps, eats and practises without strangers around, the choice narrows fast: most retreat-sized venues in Georgia are hotels with 70 to 300 rooms. This table puts the deciding facts side by side; each venue has its own card further down.
| Venue | Region | Whole venue for your group | Everyone sleeps on site | Sessions outdoors in nature | Drive from the nearest airport | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glamping Tago (ours) | Adjara mountains | Yes, whole-property buyout | Yes, 33 beds | 138 m2 outdoor platform with a sailcloth tent, plus a 38 m2 indoor dome | Batumi, 87 km, 2 to 2.5 h | 12 to 33 guests |
| Eco House Merisi | Adjara mountains (Keda) | Full buyout on request | Yes, up to 54 | Veranda and panoramic restaurant | Batumi, 48.5 km | 54 overnight, 60 at dinner |

Why do most retreat lists leave out Adjara?
Because most lists are written from Tbilisi. Seen from Batumi, Adjara has what a retreat needs: an airport, cool green mountains about two hours inland, few tourists once you leave the coast, and venues small enough to be yours alone.
Adjara has two very different halves. The coast around Batumi and Kobuleti is a busy resort strip: 2025 Geostat figures put 25.7% of all inbound visits to Georgia in Adjara, most of them on the coast. The mountains start under an hour inland, along the Batumi to Akhaltsikhe road through Keda (42 km from Batumi), Shuakhevi (67 km) and Khulo (88 km, at 923 m), up to the Goderdzi pass.

The mountains are what make Adjara work for a summer retreat. Khulo averages 23 C by day and 12 C at night in July, against 29 C in Telavi and 30 C in Tbilisi, and the national tourism site puts the sub-alpine zone of Adjara at 17 to 21 C in summer. The price is rain: Khulo sees 16 to 22 days with some rain a month from June to September, so plan an indoor space for every session.
Glamping Tago (our venue), Adjara mountains
Where: above Village Tago, Khulo municipality, at about 1,200 m. Drive: 87 km from Batumi airport, 2 to 2.5 hours. Capacity: 12 to 33 guests, all sleeping on site. Price from: 1,962 GEL per night for the whole property in April (2026 group rate). Season: 1 April to the end of October.
We are Jonas and Lisa, a Belgian couple who fell in love with these mountains and opened Glamping Tago in 2021. It is a small place on purpose: 12 Lotus Belle tents for two, each with a wood-fire stove, and a nine-bed dorm on one ridge, and with a buyout the whole ridge belongs to your group. You practise on a 138 m2 outdoor platform under a sailcloth tent or in a 38 m2 indoor geodesic dome, with mats, blocks, straps, a projector, a screen, a speaker and a microphone. Meals are served in Yurtalicious, our vegetarian yurt restaurant, the evening sauna is free for staying guests, and the Wi-Fi is Starlink at about 300 Mbps. Magti and Geocell both have mobile signal on the ridge.
The honest limits: the last stretch from Khulo is a 4x4 road (a minibus comes up by the Skhalta valley road instead; drivers without a 4x4 park in Khulo centre and take our 4x4 taxi), we close from November to March, and the tents share two bathhouse blocks. Read more on our retreats page or the retreat site.
Eco House Merisi, Keda
Where: Silibauri in the Merisi valley, Keda municipality. Drive: 48.5 km from Batumi airport, about an hour. Capacity: 12 cottages and 3 villas, up to 54 overnight and 60 at dinner. Price: a full buyout is priced individually.
Merisi sits in a side valley that turns off at Keda: on the drive from Batumi to Tago it adds a 23 km, 40-minute detour, so it is a separate trip rather than a stop on the way.
Castello Mare, Tsikhisdziri (coast)
Where: on a cliff above the Black Sea at Tsikhisdziri, between Batumi and Kobuleti. Drive: 28 km from Batumi airport. Capacity: three hotel buildings, with corporate events and weddings on the programme. Price: on request.
It suits a retreat that wants the sea, a spa and hotel service more than solitude. A 7-day women's breath and meditation retreat at a five-star cliff hotel in Tsikhisdziri runs 13 to 19 November 2026, from US$1,569 a person.
The coast also has smaller retreat programmes in Kvariati: a 4-day yoga and breathwork retreat for up to 25 people starts at US$448 a person in a triple room. Keep in mind that Batumi is wet: the Mtirala hills behind the city get about 4,500 mm of rain a year, and September and October bring the most rain to the coast.
Hotel Ambassadori Goderdzi, Goderdzi pass
Where: at 2,027 m at the Goderdzi ski resort, 34 km above Tago. Drive: 106 km from Batumi airport, about 2 hours. Capacity: a large ski hotel with two conference rooms, a spa with a pool and saunas. Price: on request. Season: winter, and summer from late July, when the Goderdzi lifts open.

Is Kakheti good for a retreat?
Kakheti is good in spring and autumn and hard work in July and August. It is the wine region east of Tbilisi, 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Tbilisi airport, with big, comfortable resorts, but Telavi averages 29 C by day in July and the large venues host weddings and family holidays at the same time as your group.
The region suits a retreat built around food and wine: Lopota has its own winery, and Sighnaghi (about 800 m) and Telavi are short drives away. Lopota's Chateau Buera winery hosts tastings and banquets for up to 220 guests.
Kvareli Lake Resort
Where: on Kvareli Lake, at the foot of the Caucasus. Drive: 140 km from Tbilisi airport, about 2 hours 15 minutes. Capacity: 100 rooms, halls for 300 and 80. Price: on request.
Lopota Lake Resort & Spa
Where: Napareuli, near Telavi. Drive: 105 km from Tbilisi airport, about 2 hours. Capacity: 310 rooms in 16 buildings, several restaurants, a winery and a spa. Price: on request.
Park Hotel Tsinandali
Where: on the Tsinandali Estate near Telavi. Drive: 92 km from Tbilisi airport, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Capacity: 72 rooms, with meeting and event spaces. Price: on request.
Is Kazbegi good for a retreat?
Kazbegi is the cool, dramatic choice and the crowded one. Stepantsminda sits at 1,740 m under Mount Kazbek, 170 km from Tbilisi airport, with July days around 21 C and nights around 7 C, but it is also a fixed stop on Tbilisi day tours and its group venues are large hotels.

The road is the Georgian Military Road over the Jvari pass (2,379 m). In summer, truck convoys to and from Russia slow the Dariali gorge section, and the drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours from the airport. A pre-booked private transfer costs 200 to 300 GEL per car, or 300 to 400 GEL for a minivan of 6 to 8. In winter the Roads Department closes the pass in snow and avalanche weather: it was closed to all traffic 13 times between January and April 2026, according to The Georgian Guide.
Most Tbilisi day tours reach Gergeti Trinity Church between noon and 2 pm, so walk up before 9 am or after 4 pm. A packaged 7-day retreat on the Sno-Juta road in August 2026 costs US$2,500 a person in a shared double and US$2,900 in a single room. After mid-October the trail to Juta and the Chaukhi pass closes for most hikers.
Rooms Kazbegi, Stepantsminda
Where: central Stepantsminda. Drive: 170 km from Tbilisi airport, 3 to 3.5 hours. Capacity: 155 rooms, a main hall for 150 seated theatre-style or 120 at a banquet, and three smaller halls. Price: on request.
Gudauri Lodge, Gudauri
Where: the Gudauri ski resort at about 2,200 m, directly on the road to Kazbegi. Drive: 135 km from Tbilisi airport, about 2.5 hours. Capacity: 121 rooms and suites. Price: on request.
What about a retreat near Tbilisi?
The Tbilisi area is the easy-logistics option: venues 45 to 66 km from the airport, no mountain pass, and the city for the free afternoon. The trade-off is heat (Tbilisi averages 30 C by day in July) and less of the remoteness people come to a retreat for.
Kiketi Farm, Kiketi
Where: the hills of Kiketi, south-west of Tbilisi. Drive: 45 km from Tbilisi airport, about an hour. Capacity: a farm to stay, dine and ride, with event areas. Price: exclusive hire of the whole location from US$10,000, with the farm grounds and outdoor areas from US$3,000.
Laguna Beach Club, Bazaleti Lake
Where: on Bazaleti Lake, 5 km south of Dusheti. Drive: 66 km from Tbilisi airport, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Capacity: a conference room for 30 to 50. Price: an all-inclusive group package at 140 GEL a person with a room and three meals, 160 GEL with the pool and sauna, and 700 GEL for the conference room.
Borjomi and Bakuriani: forest and mineral water
Borjomi is the resort town of south-central Georgia known for its mineral water, with Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park on its doorstep for hikes between sessions. Bakuriani, at about 1,700 m, is the ski resort above it, linked by road and a narrow-gauge railway.
Groups reach it from either airport: Tsemi, in the Borjomi area, is 160 km from Kutaisi airport and 189 km from Tbilisi airport. A 5-day spa retreat in Borjomi, 29 April to 3 May 2027, costs from US$1,905 a person.
Mountain Resort Gantiadi, Tsemi
Where: Tsemi, Borjomi area, at about 1,200 m. Drive: 160 km from Kutaisi airport, about 2.5 hours. Capacity: a small conference room for 40 and a large one for 150 theatre-style. Price: on request. Season: all year.
Svaneti, Racha and Tusheti: wild but hard for a group
These three are the most remote regions, and that is the problem for 20 to 30 people. Mestia (1,500 m) is 430 km and 8 to 10 hours from Tbilisi by road, Tusheti's only road crosses the Abano pass at 2,826 m and is open only from about mid-June to mid-October, and Racha is mostly small family guesthouses.
Flights help less than they seem. Vanilla Sky flies a 19-seat plane to Mestia and Ambrolauri, so a group of 25 cannot arrive on one flight. Lower Racha around Ambrolauri is wine villages and family guesthouses, so a group of 25 sleeps in several houses. Mestia nights drop to 7 C in July and below freezing in October.
Hotel Gistola, Mestia
Where: central Mestia, Svaneti. Drive: 219 km from Kutaisi airport, over 5 hours. Capacity: a hotel with meeting and banquet facilities, an indoor heated pool and a sauna. Price: on request.
What is the weather like by month in each region?
June and September are the sweet spot almost everywhere; July and August split the country into cool mountains and hot lowlands. These are long-term averages for the towns nearest the venues.
| Place | July average high / low | Other months | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khulo (Adjara mountains, 923 m) | 23 / 12 C | June 20 / 10 C, August 24 / 12 C, September 20 / 9 C | 16 to 22 days with some rain a month, June to September |
| Batumi (Adjara coast) | 25 / 17 C | August 25 / 17 C, September 23 / 14 C | 228 mm of rain in September, 248 mm in October |
| Telavi (Kakheti) | 29 / 17 C | January highs around 2 C | Heat in July and August |
| Tbilisi | 30 / 18 C | August 29 / 17 C | Peaks above 36 C |
| Stepantsminda (Kazbegi, 1,740 m) | 21 / 7 C | September 16 / 2 C, October 8 / -4 C | Jvari pass closures in winter |
| Mestia (Svaneti, 1,500 m) | 19 / 7 C | October 8 / -4 C | Frost at night in October |

How do participants get there?
Pick the airport first, then the region. Tbilisi has by far the most flights (4.75 million passengers in 2024), Kutaisi has the low-cost flights to Europe, and Batumi is the airport for Adjara.

| Route | Distance | Time | 2026 price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batumi airport to Glamping Tago | 87 km | 2 to 2.5 h | Private 4x4, 265 GEL per car of 4 |
| Batumi bus station to Khulo, marshrutka | 85 km | About 2.5 h | About 10 GEL, every 30 minutes 08:00 to 20:00 |
| Khulo to Glamping Tago | 4x4 road | 30 to 35 min | 75 GEL per car of 4; minibus 135 GEL |
| Kutaisi airport to Batumi, coach or train | About 130 km | Coach about 2 h, train 1.5 h | Coach 30 GEL, fast train 32 to 36 GEL |
| Tbilisi airport to Stepantsminda | 170 km | 3 to 3.5 h | Private transfer 200 to 300 GEL per car; marshrutka from Didube 15 to 20 GEL |
| Tbilisi to Mestia | 430 km | 8 to 10 h by marshrutka, about 50 min by air | Marshrutka 40 to 50 GEL; flight 50 to 85 GEL |
Our getting-here guide has the full Batumi and Kutaisi routes, including the Skhalta valley road by Zamleti and Cheri that minibuses use, about 2 hours from Batumi. The Khulo cable car is closed.
What does a retreat cost in each region?
Region matters less than the type of venue. A small venue you book whole has one clear price; a large hotel prices rooms and halls per request; and joining a packaged retreat costs about US$450 to 2,900 a person. These are the published 2026 numbers.

How do you choose and book, step by step?
- Fix the month first. July and August point you to the mountains (Adjara or Kazbegi); April, May and October open up Kakheti and the Tbilisi area.
- Choose the airport your group flies into. Batumi or Kutaisi for Adjara, Tbilisi for Kakheti, Kazbegi and the Tbilisi area, Kutaisi for Svaneti and Racha.
- Decide whether you need the whole venue. If yes, ask for a buyout in writing; if a hotel only offers a block of rooms, you will share the restaurant, the pool and the quiet.
- Check the practice space. Ask for the size in m2, what happens when it rains, and whether the hall is used by another event the same day.
- Book 6 to 12 months ahead for June to September. At Glamping Tago a 30% prepayment confirms the dates and is non-refundable; final numbers are due in writing 14 days before arrival and the programme 30 days before. The accommodation balance is invoiced at that point and paid before arrival; food and extras are paid at the end of the stay (booking terms).
- Plan transfers last. Pool arrivals into waves, book a minibus for the main wave and 4x4 cars for late flights.
- Send a packing list. For the Adjara mountains: a warm layer and a rain jacket for evenings, closed shoes for the trails, and a headlamp for the walk from the tents to the bathhouse.
Common mistakes when planning a retreat in Georgia
Our own guides go deeper on retreat venues in Georgia, yoga retreats and group trips for 20 to 40 people.

Glamping Tago for this
A whole-venue mountain retreat at Glamping Tago
With a buyout, Glamping Tago belongs to your group for the whole retreat: 12 Lotus Belle tents for two and a nine-bed dorm on one ridge above Village Tago, a 138 m2 outdoor platform under a sailcloth tent and a 38 m2 indoor dome for practice, and our kitchen and team on site.
You bring the programme; we handle meals in Yurtalicious, the evening sauna, transfers from Batumi or Kutaisi in waves, and jeep days to Green Lake or Khikhani fortress between sessions. Groups bigger than 33 use the family guesthouses in the village: in August 2026 we hosted a meditation retreat for more than 100 people that way.

Questions people ask
Which region of Georgia is best for a yoga retreat in summer?
The mountains: the Adjara mountains or Kazbegi. Khulo averages 23 C by day and 12 C at night in July and Stepantsminda 21 C and 7 C, while Telavi reaches 29 C and Tbilisi 30 C. Adjara is reached from Batumi airport, Kazbegi from Tbilisi airport.
Is Adjara good for a retreat?
Yes, if you go inland. The Adjara mountains are 1 to 2.5 hours from Batumi airport, cool and green in summer, and have small venues you can book whole, such as Glamping Tago (12 to 33 guests) and Eco House Merisi (up to 54). The coast around Batumi is busier and wettest in September and October.
Kazbegi or Kakheti for a retreat?
Kazbegi for a summer retreat in cool mountain air, Kakheti for spring or autumn with wine and food. Kazbegi is 170 km from Tbilisi airport and busy with day tours at Gergeti between noon and 2 pm; Kakheti venues are 92 to 140 km away and hot in July and August. In both regions the group venues are large hotels you share with other guests.
Will other guests be on site during our retreat?
Only if you book part of a venue. At Glamping Tago a whole-property buyout means no other guests; a partial booking shares the common spaces on a schedule. In a 100 to 300 room resort, ask in writing which other groups and events are booked on your dates.
Is it cold sleeping in a tent in the Adjara mountains?
Nights in Khulo average 12 C in July and 9 to 10 C in June and September, and Glamping Tago is higher, at about 1,200 m. Each tent has a wood-fire stove and full bedding, but pack a warm layer for evenings outside.
Can we hold a retreat in Georgia in March or November?
Yes, but not at Glamping Tago, which is open from 1 April to the end of October. In winter Kazbegi depends on the Jvari pass, which the Roads Department closes in snow; the Tbilisi area and Kakheti are the easiest regions outside the summer season.
Is there Wi-Fi and phone signal at a mountain retreat in Adjara?
At Glamping Tago, yes: the Wi-Fi is Starlink at about 300 Mbps, enough for video calls, and Magti and Geocell both have mobile signal on the ridge. For a digital detox you can still ask participants to hand in their phones; the Wi-Fi is there for the facilitator and for emergencies.
How far ahead should we book a retreat venue in Georgia?
Book June to September dates 6 to 12 months ahead. At Glamping Tago a 30% prepayment confirms the dates and is non-refundable, the final number of participants is due in writing 14 days before arrival, and the programme 30 days before.
How do participants get from the airport to a mountain retreat in Adjara?
From Batumi airport it is 87 km and 2 to 2.5 hours to Glamping Tago: a private 4x4 costs 265 GEL per car of four, and minibuses come up by the Skhalta valley road. From Kutaisi airport, take the coach (30 GEL, about 2 hours) or the fast train (1.5 hours) to Batumi first, or a private 4x4 straight to the camp: 465 GEL per car of four, about 5.5 hours.
