The best wedding photo spots in the Adjara mountains are the ridge at Glamping Tago, Makhuntseti waterfall and the Queen Tamar bridge, the Dandalo and Purtio bridges, Green Lake and Khikhani Fortress. Here is how to reach each from Batumi, the light by month and time of day, and the permits you need for Khikhani, protected areas and drones.

The Adjara mountains give you four kinds of wedding photo along one road from Batumi: a mountain ridge with the valley below, a stone arch bridge over a river, a waterfall in a green gorge, and alpine lakes and fortress ruins above 2,000 m. This guide covers each spot with the drive, the walk, the best light by time of day and month, the permits and the mistakes that cost couples their best shots.

The ceremony arch on the meadow at Glamping Tago

All of it lies in mountainous Adjara, in the far southwest of Georgia (the country), on or just off the Batumi to Khulo road. Our venue, Glamping Tago, sits on a ridge above Village Tago in Khulo, so these are the places we send our couples and their photographers.

Which venue fits your elopement or small wedding?

For a wedding where the photos happen where you sleep, pick a venue in the mountains rather than a Batumi hotel and day trips. The table compares the two mountain venues with photo spots on site, and the no-venue option of a day out from Batumi.

Glamping Tago (our venue), Adjara

  • Where: a ridge above Village Tago, Khulo municipality, at about 1,200 m
  • From Batumi: about 2 hours: 85 km of asphalt to Khulo, then 30 to 35 minutes up a 4x4 road, or the easier Skhalta valley road from Zamleti that normal cars and minibuses manage (how to get here)
  • Capacity: made for weddings of about 30 guests; the whole camp belongs to your wedding and up to 33 people sleep on site
  • Price from: the whole camp from 3,258 GEL a night in April (2026), see the wedding page
  • Season: weddings May to mid-October; the camp is open 1 April to the end of October

The photo spots are the venue itself. Most couples marry on the meadow facing the mountains, under an arch our team makes. Because the whole camp is yours, every clearing, the fire circle and the event tent on its deck above the valley are photo spots too, all within a two-minute walk of the tents, as the organizer page shows. The heated yoga dome (38 m2) is your getting-ready room at no charge, so the photographer can shoot the preparations, the first look and the ceremony without anyone getting into a car.

Our sample day puts the ceremony at 16:00 on the meadow, canapes and photos at 17:00 while the couple slips away for golden-hour portraits, and dinner at 19:00. Guests eat in Yurtalicious, the yurt restaurant on site, while you shoot. Plan the portraits for the last light, never during dinner.

Eco House Merisi, Keda

  • Where: Silibauri village, Keda municipality, about 50 km from Batumi by road
  • Capacity: up to 50 wedding guests (ceremonies and dinners up to 60), 54 beds
  • Price: every wedding is priced individually

Merisi is the other mountain venue built around photos: its wedding page lists swings, a heart installation, observation decks and glass bridges, an open-air ceremony platform of about 50 m2 at the cliff edge and a 100 m2 covered space when it rains. A full hotel buyout is possible, and the venue sits closer to Batumi than Tago.

Which Adjara mountain photo spot fits your day?

Shoot the venue spots on the wedding day, and give the big landscapes their own morning: Green Lake and Khikhani each take half a day or more. The waterfall and the bridges fit into the drive up from Batumi.

How do you get photos at Makhuntseti waterfall and the Queen Tamar bridge without crowds?

Arrive early in the morning or near evening. The site is busy at midday and on summer weekends, and the Madloba bridge guide gives the same advice for the bridge.

The waterfall is in Keda municipality, about 30 km from Batumi, just off the main road to Khulo. Entry is free, parking costs 2 GEL and the site is open round the clock, but there is no lighting after dark. Minibus 77 towards Keda stops at the waterfall for 3 GEL in cash. The flow is strongest in spring, according to Madloba.

The Queen Tamar bridge is a stone arch a few minutes' walk from the waterfall, about 29 m long and 2.5 m wide on Madloba's figures. It has no railings. Keep the dress train and anyone walking backwards with a camera well away from the edge, and shoot between the waves of tourists rather than waiting for an empty bridge at noon.

On the map, the waterfall and the Dandalo bridge add only about 4 km to the drive from Batumi to Tago, so both fit on your way up.

Which old arch bridges are on the way to the mountains?

Two stone arch bridges sit on the Batumi to Khulo road and are quieter than Makhuntseti: Dandalo and Purtio. Both are free.

Dandalo stands in Keda municipality near the main road and is a cultural monument of state importance. Reviewers mention how quiet it is, with almost no tourists, which is what you want for portraits. After rain the river runs high and fast and the tables by the water can flood, so check the weather the day before.

Purtio (also written Furtio) is in Shuakhevi municipality between Zamleti and Furtio, 15.5 km from Tago by road. Its roadway is 19.7 m long and 2.2 m wide, and legend says Queen Tamar crossed it on her way to Skhalta. You reach it down steel stairs from the road. A dam upstream can raise the river suddenly, so stay out of the water.

Which spots near Batumi make a separate morning?

Mirveti waterfall and the Tskhemlara bridge lie in side valleys close to Batumi, not on the road to the mountains. Shoot them on a separate morning, or on the day before you drive up.

Mirveti is in Khelvachauri, 19 to 25 km from Batumi depending on where you start. You leave the main road over a narrow suspension bridge that takes one car at a time, drive to the last parking and walk about 100 m on a stone path and wooden deck. Entry is free. Arrive around 08:00 for the morning mist, before the first tour bus.

The Tskhemlara bridge is a medieval arch in the Machakhela valley, 2 km from the national park administration and 27 km from Batumi. Machakhela National Park lists it among its sights, so ask the park administration about the filming permit described below before a commercial shoot.

Is Nika photo park worth it on a rainy day?

Yes, as a back-up or for a styled shoot. Nika photo park in Chanchkhalo (Shuakhevi) is a garden of staged photo zones at 1,050 m, about 2 hours from Batumi. Day visitors pay 80 GEL, heated pool included, a dress with a train hires for 60 GEL and a Georgian costume for 30 GEL. It opens 12:00 to 19:00 by appointment only and takes no children under 150 cm.

It adds about 8 km to the drive, so it is a side trip, not a stop on the way to Tago. The park has no photographer of its own and shares the contacts of photographers who shoot there; several recent reviews say the host helps with the shoot.

How do you get Green Lake into your photos?

Go in the morning. Fog is the main risk at Green Lake: cloud builds on the pass through the day and can hide the lake completely, so cross the pass early and keep the afternoon for the drive back.

Green Lake with wildflowers in the foreground and green mountains around
Green Lake in June, before the afternoon fog

The lake lies at 2,058 m, 6 km north of the Goderdzi pass and 112 to 118 km from Batumi; from Tago it is 39.9 km over Khulo. Entry is free, with no gate and no closing time. The water is green through the day and changes shade in the evening and as the weather moves, the Visit Batumi page notes. There is no cafe or shop at the lake.

From June to October a normal car reaches the lake; the last 6 km from the pass is paved. On the climb from Khulo, 41 of the 47 km of the Khulo to Zarzma road are finished in asphalt, the Supreme Council of Adjara reports, so expect a few unfinished stretches. A 4x4 from Khulo to the lake costs 120 to 150 GEL per vehicle, 150 GEL for the whole day, on the Adjara tourism route page. Khulo has the last supermarket, ATMs and pharmacies before the lake.

Dress for the altitude. June days at the lake usually reach about 17°C with nights near 6°C, September days 16 to 19°C, October about 11°C with nights near freezing, so pack a warm coat for between shots whatever the month. There is no reliable phone signal at the lake or on long stretches of the pass road, so download an offline map and agree a pick-up time with your driver; the stalls and guesthouses up there take cash only, as our Green Lake guide explains.

For a horse in the frame, Ambassadori Goderdzi runs a one-hour, 4 km ride around the lake for 250 GEL per person with the 4x4 transfer.

What else can you shoot around the Goderdzi pass?

Open meadows at the pass, an alpine garden and the Shuamta lakes. Each is a short detour from the Green Lake road rather than a stop on it, so pick one for the same morning.

The meadows of the Goderdzi pass at 2,025 m give you open grass and far ridges without walking. The pass is 38.8 km from Tago by road; the lake road leaves the main road just before the top, so the pass adds about 7 km to a Green Lake morning. Snow can lie by the road into June, and the top is cold and windy even in July.

The Goderdzi Alpine Garden, 2.5 km past the pass on the Beshumi road at 1,960 m, is free, open to 20:00 and best from 15 May to 15 October. It has no toilet, so use the one before you leave Khulo.

The Shuamta lakes are five lakes on summer pastures, a 1-hour hike or half-hour drive from Beshumi, with a view of Khikhani. Clouds often settle on them, which suits a moody shoot. The biggest lies at 2,150 m. Walking on from the lakes to Khikhani needs the same border permit as the fortress; the Adjara tourism department marks a bypass for walkers without one, as our Khikhani guide shows. Best from June to September.

Is Khikhani Fortress worth the climb and the permit for photos?

Yes, for a couple who hike: the ruins stand at 2,236 m, and from the top you see both Georgia and Turkey. The price is a free Border Police permit sent ahead and a 1 to 3 hour climb.

Aerial view of the Khikhani Fortress ruins on a green mountain ridge
Khikhani Fortress at 2,236 m

The fortress is 36.4 km from Tago up the Skhalta valley, with Skhalta Monastery on the way. The last 7.5 km of track to the car park needs a high-clearance car, and the last kilometre is on foot: 254 steps, 14 metal staircases and 400 to 500 m of climbing. Fit walkers reach the top in 70 to 80 minutes, a slow pace takes 3 hours. There is no water on the path, so fill up at the tap by the car park, and bring cash: everything above Khulo is paid in cash.

Send your route and scanned passports to the Border Police at bpol@mia.gov.ge at least 5 working days before the trip, as Trek Georgia explains, then register at the checkpoint before you climb and carry the passports. Our Khikhani guide has the full walk. The upper track is dependable from June to mid-October, and September is the best month. Days at the top reach 15 to 18°C in September and nights fall to about 6°C.

Skhalta Monastery, a hall church with 14th-15th century frescoes, makes a quieter stop on the same road. A marked path runs 8.4 km from the gate of Glamping Tago down to it. Visit earlier in the day.

When is the light best in the Adjara mountains, by month and time of day?

July and August have the clearest skies; May and October bring more cloud, while September and early October are warm and golden. The best hour is the last one before sunset, and in the morning for anything above 2,000 m, where cloud builds by midday.

A couple in silhouette against a golden sunset over the mountains
Sunset portraits on the ridge
MonthSunset in BatumiWhat the month gives you
May20:11 to 20:40Green meadows, more cloud, snow on the high passes
June20:41 to 20:51Meadow flowers, Green Lake road open
July20:51 to 20:32Clearest skies, warmest days
August20:31 to 19:48Clear, but late August can be rainy
September19:47 to 18:57Warm and golden, best month for Khikhani
October18:55 to 18:09Golden early in the month, cold nights, the camp closes at the end

Georgia keeps the same clock all year, so the October sunset does not jump an hour. The sky over Batumi is overcast or mostly cloudy about 10% of the time in early September and about half the time by late October, on Weather Spark's figures. At Tago, June days usually reach about 24°C, September 22 to 25°C and October about 18°C with nights down to 5 to 8°C. Rain falls on 11 to 14 days a month in summer, so bring umbrellas and use the dry breaks for portraits.

Do you need a permit for a wedding photo shoot or a drone?

At Makhuntseti, Green Lake and Khikhani you need no filming permit: they lie outside Georgia's protected areas. Inside a protected area, any photo or video shoot, drone included, needs a permit from the Agency of Protected Areas.

In Adjara those areas are Mtirala National Park, Kintrishi and Machakhela National Park, plus the Goderdzi Petrified Forest natural monument. The agency issues small-scale commercial, large-scale commercial and non-commercial filming permits; you apply on its form.

Drones have their own rules from the Civil Aviation Agency:

  1. Register as an operator on uas.gov.ge if the drone weighs 250 g or more or carries a camera, whatever its weight. Registration is free, and an EASA registration from home is not valid in Georgia.
  2. Above 250 g, also pass the free online competence test (75% pass mark, valid 5 years).
  3. Label the drone with your registration number.
  4. Never fly over a group of people, so no drone directly above the ceremony.
  5. Near Khikhani, stay inside Georgia: the border runs along the next ridge, and the border zone reaches up to 5 km from it.

At Glamping Tago, agree drone times with us before the day. An early-morning drone over the tents wakes everyone, and the best aerials come at the golden hour anyway.

How do you plan the photo day, step by step?

Book the venue first, then the photographer, then the transport and the permits, and keep a rain plan for every spot.

  1. Book the venue 6 to 12 months ahead for June to September; our high-season weddings go that early.
  2. Book the photographer and send them this guide's spots with your times. Some couples book an extra hour before the ceremony for the getting-ready shots.
  3. Sort the photographer's transport and bed. A photographer coming alone can take the minibus from Batumi bus station to Khulo (about 10 GEL, every 30 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00) and our 4x4 taxi (75 GEL per car) for the last 30 to 35 minutes, or share the vendor car from Batumi and back (530 GEL) with the other vendors. Transfers are paid in cash at our reception, never to the driver. In a whole-camp wedding they can sleep in one of your beds on the ridge.
  4. Send the Khikhani permit request at least 5 working days ahead if you want the fortress.
  5. Register the drone on uas.gov.ge before you arrive.
  6. Check the road and the weather the evening before. The Khulo tourist information centre answers on road conditions, and mountain roads close at short notice for rockfall and landslides.
  7. Set the times by the sunset table, and keep the high spots for the morning.

The event tent is the rain plan for the ceremony

If it storms on the day, the ceremony moves into the event tent (15.2 by 9.7 m, sides close) or the yurt, and the portraits wait for a dry break.

What are the most common photo mistakes in the Adjara mountains?

  • Midday at Makhuntseti. The bridge is full of people and the light is flat. Go early or late.
  • Green Lake in the afternoon. The fog that builds on the pass can hide the lake. Cross in the morning.
  • The dress on a bridge with no railings. Queen Tamar has none, nor do some waterfall steps. Someone holds the train; nobody walks backwards near the edge.
  • A drone over the guests. Georgian rules forbid flying over a group of people, and it wakes other guests at dawn. Agree the times first.
  • Khikhani without a permit. The checkpoint turns you back. Email 5 working days ahead.
  • Summer clothes at 2,000 m. June days at Green Lake usually reach only about 17°C, and nights fall to about 6°C. Pack a coat and warm shoes for between shots.
  • Riverside shots after rain. Dandalo and Purtio rivers rise fast. Stay on the bank.

Glamping Tago for this

A mountain wedding weekend with the photo spots on site

We are Jonas and Lisa, a Belgian couple who fell in love with these mountains and opened Glamping Tago in 2021. The camp is made for weddings of about 30 guests: for your weekend the whole ridge is yours, everyone sleeps on site, and the meadow, the clearings and the fire circle are your photo spots.

You get ready in the heated dome, marry on the meadow under an arch our team makes, shoot the golden hour a few steps from the tents and eat in Yurtalicious, our yurt restaurant. We plan the transfers for you and your photographer, and the jeep to Green Lake or the road to Khikhani the morning after.

Questions people ask

What are the best elopement photo spots in the Adjara mountains?

The ridge and ceremony meadow at Glamping Tago, Makhuntseti waterfall with the Queen Tamar bridge, the quieter Dandalo and Purtio arch bridges, Green Lake at 2,058 m and Khikhani Fortress at 2,236 m. The waterfall and the bridges sit on the Batumi to Khulo road; Green Lake and Khikhani are half-day trips from Tago.

Do you need a permit for a wedding photo shoot or a drone in Georgia's national parks?

Yes: any photo or video shoot in a protected area, drone included, needs a permit from the Agency of Protected Areas. In Adjara that means Mtirala, Kintrishi and Machakhela National Park. Makhuntseti, Green Lake and Khikhani lie outside them, and any drone with a camera must be registered free on uas.gov.ge.

When is golden hour at Green Lake?

Golden hour is the last hour before sunset, about 20:00 in late June and about 18:00 in early October. At Green Lake fog often builds through the afternoon, so shoot there in the morning and keep the golden hour for the venue.

What time is sunset for an autumn wedding in Adjara?

Sunset in Batumi falls from 19:47 at the start of September to 18:57 at the end, and from 18:55 to 18:09 through October. Georgia does not change its clocks, so plan a 16:00 ceremony and portraits from about 17:00 in late September.

How does our photographer get to Glamping Tago, and can they stay the night?

A photographer can take the minibus from Batumi to Khulo and our 4x4 taxi for the last 30 to 35 minutes (75 GEL per car), or share the vendor car from Batumi and back (530 GEL). In a whole-camp wedding they can sleep in one of your 33 beds on the ridge.

Can we fly a drone at Glamping Tago?

Yes, once it is registered in Georgia and the times are agreed with us. Never fly directly over the guests, which Georgian rules forbid, and avoid early mornings over the tents. The golden hour gives the best aerials anyway.

Is Khikhani Fortress worth it for wedding photos?

For a couple who hike, yes: from the ruins at 2,236 m you see both Georgia and Turkey. It takes a free Border Police permit emailed at least 5 working days ahead, then 1 to 3 hours up 254 steps and metal staircases. Carry the dress in a backpack and water for the climb.

Can we invite more than 30 guests to Glamping Tago?

Glamping Tago is made for about 30 guests with 33 beds on the ridge. Bigger weddings of up to about 100 guests work with the family guesthouses in the village, where the extra guests sleep.
