About this experience
The reason you're going is jara - an ancient Georgian method of beekeeping that's the most natural way of making honey there is. No chemicals, no industrial techniques, almost no human interference in the bees' work. The bees themselves have lived in these mountains for centuries and have built up extraordinary immunity to disease, something modern beekeeping has largely lost. Mindia is a sixth-generation Jara keeper, one of the few people in Georgia still doing it the original way. You're welcomed into his home for a tasting of his honey and then a proper Georgian feast: homemade dishes, Jara honey on the table, the kind of meal that turns into an afternoon. By the time you head back to Tago, the light has gone golden on the ridges and there's usually a jar in the boot.
What to expect
- Half-day round trip from Glamping Tago, roughly 5–6 hours
- A scenic drive deep into upper Adjara: ridges, stone villages, rivers, alpine meadows
- A welcome at Mindia's home, sixth-generation Jara beekeeper
- A look at the jara hives themselves (skip on request if you're allergic)
- A guided tasting of his wild mountain honey, with the story of how it's made
- A traditional Georgian feast cooked by the family, jara honey on the table
- Honey to take home at a Tago guest price (cash only)
- Return to Tago
Good to know
Yes, Mindia keeps different sized jars on hand and offers them to Tago guests at a special price. Bring cash (Georgian lari) if you'd like to pick some up.
The tasting happens inside the host's home, away from the hives. If you'd like to see the hives too, mention your allergy in advance and we'll skip that part.
