Hike to the Green Hill (Skhalta Half-route)
Duration: 2h
Difficulty: Easy
Short description
This short route is perfect if you’re not up for a strenuous hike but still want to enjoy some physical activity, take great photos, and relax in a beautiful setting on a green hill. Since the route is easy and not too far, we suggest bringing some snacks and a rug for a picnic at the end.
Tip: If you’re looking for more of a challenge, consider taking the full route to the Skhalta monastery, which we describe here.
How far is it?
The walk will take about 2 hours at a leisurely pace, including time for photos and a short break on a picturesque green hill.
What’s the trail like?
The path is wide and safe. There’s a section with a narrower path, but there’s no risk of falling. Note that due to the construction of a new road, parts of the trail might be muddy, especially after rain.
What to wear?
Any comfortable clothing will do. Just make sure to wear comfortable footwear suitable for potentially muddy conditions.
Wildlife
Since the trail mostly passes near villages, encountering wild animals is unlikely. However, if you do, please follow the general guidelines we’ve posted here.
The Route
Start at the upper exit of the Glamping site and turn right. Follow the yellow markers leading to Skhalta monastery.
You’ll soon reach a great photo spot. Check the map for its location and some photo ideas below.
Continue along the wide road, enjoying views of fields and forests, until you reach a crossroads with a yellow marker. Take the upper (left) road and head into the forest. At the next fork, follow the yellow sign and take the left path again towards Skhalta monastery.
The road becomes a lovely green path along a picturesque fence. This path leads into the forest, where the scent of pine trees on a sunny day is incredible.
Eventually, you’ll come to a newly constructed road that might be muddy. Be sure your footwear can handle it.
The trail ends in a fern field, which is beautiful in summer and vibrant during autumn. Though the path seems to end here, keep going a bit further through the ferns, and you’ll see the trail continues.
Finally, the green path leads you to a stunning green hill. Here you can sit on the rocks or grass in the shade of trees, enjoying views of the mountains and cows grazing below. This spot is perfect for photos, videos, a picnic, or just relaxing with a book or sketchpad.
Retrace your steps to return.
