# Digital Detox in Georgia (the Country), 2026-2027: Where to Spend a Week Without Your Phone

Source: https://glampingtago.ge/blog/digital-detox-retreat-georgia · Updated 2026-10-11 · Glamping Tago

## TL;DR

- Four programmes in Georgia the country physically collect devices: the Digital Detox Week at Glamping Tago in Adjara (26 Oct - 1 Nov 2026), the Metta.Land silent course (16-20 Oct), ten-day Vipassana courses in Bakuriani (7-18 and 20-31 Oct) and a Zen sesshin in Tsikhisdziri (1-4 Oct).
- A ten-day Vipassana course in Georgia costs nothing at all, not even for food and accommodation, and devices are deposited with management with no calls, messages or visitors until it ends.
- A six-night hosted week at Glamping Tago is EUR 600 for a dorm bed, EUR 810 for a bed in a shared tent and EUR 1,190 for a private tent, 10% less if booked by 12 October 2026.
- The cheapest genuine phone-free format in the country is the 300 GEL four-day Zen sesshin in Tsikhisdziri, 20.6 km north of Batumi, with the bed and all meals included.
- Glamping Tago has Starlink at about 300 Mbps and mobile coverage, so the week is a rule the camp keeps rather than a dead zone, and reception stays reachable on +995 555 56 24 83 all week.
- From Batumi a marshrutka to Khulo takes about 2h30 for around 10 GEL, then a 4x4 taxi covers the last 7.7 km to Tago in 30 to 35 minutes for 75 GEL per car. A private transfer is 265 GEL.

Four programmes in the country of Georgia actually take your phone off you, and this guide prices and dates all of them: a six-night week in mountainous Adjara from EUR 600, a four-night silent course at EUR 260, a 300 GEL Zen sesshin on the coast and a ten-day Vipassana course that costs nothing. Plus what the evidence really says, when to go, and how to get there from Batumi.

## Can you really spend a week without your phone in Georgia (the country)?

Yes, and four programmes in the country will physically take the phone off you: the [Digital Detox & Mental Health Week](https://digital-detox.glampingtago.ge/) at Glamping Tago in mountainous Adjara, the [Metta.Land](https://metta.land/) silent course, a ten-day [Vipassana](https://ge.dhamma.org/en/) course in Bakuriani, and the [Georgian Sangha](https://zengeorgia.com/retreat_zazen_en) Zen sesshin on the Adjara coast. Everything else sold here as a detox is a quiet hotel where switching off is your own job.

This is Georgia the country, in the Caucasus, with Tbilisi as its capital and Batumi on the Black Sea. The mountains start two hours from the sea, the villages in them run at walking speed, and a week in one of them costs a fraction of what the same week costs in western Europe. [Unplugged](https://unplugged.rest/), the British operator that built this category, runs 30 off-grid cabins and [starts at GBP 390 for three nights](https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/travel/phone-free-holidays-digital-detox-retreats-cabins-holiday-ideas-b1168720.html). A six-night hosted week here, with three meals a day and the whole programme, runs EUR 600 to EUR 1,190.

The whole country holds four dated, priced, phone-collecting formats and about half a dozen honest alternatives with no device rule at all. This guide separates them, prices them, and gets you to the door.

> **Good to know:** Citizens of the countries on Georgia's [visa-free list](https://matsne.gov.ge/en/document/view/2867361) may enter and stay for one full year. Since 1 January 2026, [Resolution No. 602](https://matsne.gov.ge/ka/document/view/6728816) also requires every visitor to hold health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL covering the whole stay, on paper or on a screen, in Georgian or English. The police may ask for it at the border.

## Which phone-free retreats and quiet weeks exist in Georgia in 2026 and 2027?

Four programmes with published dates collect devices: Glamping Tago's autumn week, Metta's four-night course, the ten-day Vipassana courses in Bakuriani and the Georgian Sangha Zen sesshin on the coast. Prices run from nothing to EUR 1,190 per person, and they suit completely different people.

| Do it yourself in a village with no signal | Upper Adjara, Svaneti, Tusheti | as long as you like | Tusheti roughly late June to late October | Guesthouse rates plus transport | Nothing. The road and the ridge do it for you |

### Digital Detox & Mental Health Week, Glamping Tago (mountainous Adjara)

- **Where:** Village Tago, Khulo municipality, upper Adjara, at 1,200 m, with ridges of around 2,000 m on three sides.
- **Drive time:** about 2.5 hours from Batumi, about 5.5 hours from Kutaisi, about 8.5 hours from Tbilisi. The last 7.7 km from Khulo is a 4x4 road.
- **Capacity:** 33 people, in 12 two-person Lotus Belle tents and one nine-bed Half Dome dormitory.
- **Dates:** Monday 26 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, six nights. Everyone starts together on Monday. Most stay the whole week; 4 or 5 nights is possible too.
- **Price from:** EUR 540 for a dorm bed until 12 October 2026, EUR 600 from 13 October (the 30% early bird ended on 2 October). Accommodation, three meals a day and the whole programme are included; transfers are not.
- **Phone rule:** phone, laptop, tablet and smartwatch go into a labelled pouch and into a safe at arrival and come back at the closing circle. A basic e-reader without a browser and a simple camera stay with you, and the tents have electricity and sockets to charge them. The camp lends digital and film cameras.
- **Good for:** people who work in front of a screen, want structure rather than a spa, and would rather do this in a group than alone. Many guests come on their own.
- **Watch out for:** one fixed week a year, a fully vegetarian kitchen, two shared shower blocks, and late October nights that drop close to freezing.

The day runs 08:30 morning meditation, 09:15 yoga on the platform, 10:00 breakfast, 11:00 to 13:00 a psychological talk and a group circle, 13:30 lunch, 14:30 to 18:00 sport, hikes and free time, 18:00 evening meditation, 18:30 dinner, 19:30 to 22:00 sauna tent and ice bath, campfire from 20:00. The week opens with a welcome circle on the Monday evening and ends with a closing circle on the Sunday morning. Alcohol is allowed in moderation: a glass of red wine with dinner is fine, because the detox is from screens and not from everything.

One thing is worth saying plainly, because it is the honest version: the camp has [Starlink](https://www.starlink.com/) at about 300 Mbps and Magti reaches the valley. Nothing here forces you offline. The box does, and reception stays reachable on [+995 555 56 24 83](https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=995555562483) all week, so your family has a number that is answered. You can also ask a host for your own phone at any time.

> Our own camp at about 1,200 m above Village Tago, and the only place in Georgia that runs a hosted week with phones locked in a safe. The last 7.7 km from Khulo needs a 4x4, 30 to 35 minutes and 75 GEL per car.

### Metta: a Vipassana retreat in Thai village style

- **Where:** a house rented in the Georgian hills for each course, away from towns and villages. Up to 10 participants plus a cook, a volunteer and the teacher.
- **Dates:** [16 to 20 October 2026](https://metta.land/), four nights.
- **Price:** budget EUR 260 or the equivalent for shared costs, plus whatever you give for the teaching. The organisers quote two figures, EUR 250 in the summary and EUR 260 in the funding section, and the higher one is the itemised total: venue rent, food, transfers, firewood, cushions and the first-aid kit.
- **Phone rule:** mobiles and other electronic and media devices are handed over at the opening ceremony on the first evening and returned at the closing one at noon on the last day. The organisers give you a manager's number to leave with family.
- **Day:** 05:00 wake-up, practice from 06:00, breakfast 08:30, practice 10:00, lunch 12:30, afternoon practice 14:30, evening tea 18:00, participants' questions 19:00, evening practice 20:00, end of day 21:30. Two meals and the evening tea. There is no dinner.
- **Good for:** anyone who wants real silence on a short calendar. Attentive silence covers gestures, notes and eye contact; men and women are housed separately; reading and writing are discouraged.
- **Watch out for:** ten places, the venue changes course to course, the whole thing runs in Russian, and booking goes through one Telegram handle. The transfer from Batumi or Kutaisi is announced a week before the start, and you must be in Georgia by 07:00 on day one, with arrival at the house between 16:00 and 17:00.

Teaching is led by [Mikhail Seleznyov](https://metta.land/), who has more than 24 years of practice, trained in monasteries in Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam and took full ordination in 2016 in the Maha Nikaya Theravada community.

> **Tip:** The same teacher runs a free open sit in Tbilisi on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 12:00 to 13:45, at the [Bao Cha](https://baocha.ge/) tea house on Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue, entrance from Chorokhi Street. No booking, no money, no commitment. It is the cheapest way to find out whether sitting still for four days is for you before you pay for four days of it.

### A ten-day Vipassana course in Bakuriani, donation only

- **Where:** Georgia has no Vipassana centre of its own, so the courses run at a rented venue in Bakuriani, the resort village at about 1,700 m in the Borjomi district.
- **Dates:** 7 to 18 October and 20 to 31 October 2026, taught in English and Russian. Registration is obligatory and notification can take up to two weeks.
- **Price:** nothing at all, not even for food and accommodation. Donations are accepted only from people who have already completed a ten-day course.
- **Phone rule:** the strictest in the country. Phones, smartwatches and other devices are deposited with management, and there is no outside communication of any kind until the course ends. In an emergency a relative contacts the management.
- **Day:** 04:00 wake-up bell, meditation from 04:30, group sittings at 08:00, 14:30, 18:00 and 20:15, lunch 11:00 to 12:00, a discourse at 19:00, lights out 21:30. Around ten hours of meditation a day.
- **Watch out for:** the [code of discipline](https://www.dhamma.org/en/about/code) states that Vipassana is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment, is not recommended for people with significant mental health issues, and that old symptoms can resurface during or after a course. Read it before you apply, not after.

Places go unevenly. On both October courses the men's places are open and the women's are filling up or on a short wait list, while returning students on both sides face a long wait list. Registration runs from 14:00 to 16:00 on the first day and the course ends by 07:30 on the last morning, so book a bed for the night before and the night after: neither end fits a same-day flight.

> **Kokhta Bakuriani Hotel** (Bakuriani, Borjomi municipality (Samtskhe-Javakheti))
> A large hotel in Bakuriani for the night before and the night after a ten-day Vipassana course, which registers from 14:00 on day one and ends by 07:30 on the last morning. Open all year.
> Capacity: 92 rooms in four categories · Season: All year · Google 4.4 (686)
> Pros: Open all year, 92 rooms; A bed for the night before and after a Vipassana course
> Cons: A large ski hotel, not a retreat; No device rule of its own

### A four-day Zen sesshin on the Adjara coast

The cheapest genuine phone-free format in the country. The [Georgian Sangha](https://zengeorgia.com/retreat_zazen_en) holds a Soto Zen sesshin in Tsikhisdziri from 1 to 4 October 2026: 300 GEL covers the bed and every meal for three nights, gadgets are set aside for the duration and silence is kept between sessions. Zazen alternates with work, mindful eating, walking and question-and-answer sessions, so it is less austere than a Goenka course and far shorter. The fee covers rent, food and supplies, and nobody takes a profit from it.

Tsikhisdziri is 20.6 km and 29 minutes north of Batumi on the coast road, which makes this the one option on the list you can reach from a Batumi hotel in half an hour. Registration is by a form on the site; the contact is Alexandra, +995 568 713 711 or Telegram @sashashadrina.

### EkoRetreat, near Mtskheta

Seven days in Saguramo, 7 to 13 October 2026, for about thirty people: gentle psychological and spiritual practice with psychologist Sergey Sotnikov, three meals a day, and excursions to Mtskheta, Svetitskhoveli, Shio-Mgvime and the monastery of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. The programme runs in Russian.

Two houses take the group, next door to each other in the village. [The price is all-inclusive](https://www.ekoretreat.com/post/%D0%B3%D0%B4%D0%B5-%D0%B2%D1%8B-%D0%B1%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%B5-%D0%B6%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C-%D0%BD%D0%B0-%D1%80%D0%B5%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5-%D0%B2-%D0%BC%D1%86%D1%85%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%B5-%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%B3%D1%83%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%BE-%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%83%D0%B7%D0%B8%D1%8F) and covers the room, three meals a day, every practice, the excursions and the transfers: from EUR 710 per person in a double room at the guesthouse with its sauna and hammam, from EUR 810 in the boutique hotel with the pool. Saguramo is 29.5 km and about half an hour from central Tbilisi.

There is no rule about phones or laptops here, so the screen-free part is your own discipline, and the calendar stops after October 2026.

### The coast weeks sold on the marketplaces

[BookRetreats](https://bookretreats.com/s/wellness-retreats/georgia) counts 30 retreats around Georgia with 25 reviews between them, and exactly two of them are physically inside the country. The seven-day I Am Pause women's week runs at Tsikhisdziri Beach on 16-22 October and 13-19 November 2026 from US$1,569, six nights in a five-star cliff hotel above the Black Sea with seven vegetarian breakfasts, six late dinners and daily morning breathing sessions, rated 5.00 from 16 reviews. The five-day Complete Reset in Borjomi runs 29 April to 3 May 2027 at US$1,935, listed down from US$2,049, rated 4.97 from 9 reviews, with daily yoga and qigong and nervous-system workshops in a five-star spa hotel. Both carry free cancellation.

Both are real and well reviewed. Neither states a device rule, which is why neither appears in the phone-free list above.

> **Watch out:** Two of the big retreat marketplaces file the American state under the same name. The only digital detox retreat [Retreat Guru](https://retreat.guru/be/digital-detox-retreats-in-georgia) lists for Georgia is Elevate Retreat in Ellijay, north of Atlanta, at US$3,212 for five days. The [BookRetreats digital detox page for Georgia](https://bookretreats.com/s/wellness-retreats/digital-detox-retreats/georgia) fills with retreats in Cyprus, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland under a heading that reads "retreats near Georgia". Check the town, not the country name, before you book a flight.

## What does a real no-phone rule look like, and which retreats actually have one?

A real rule has three parts: the device is collected and stored, there is a published number your family can ring instead, and you can get your phone back on request without an argument. Anything softer is a suggestion, and suggestions lose to notifications.

The market's own standard is stricter than most listings. [Unplugged](https://www.service95.com/what-really-happens-on-a-digital-detox-retreat) locks the phone in a box and hands you an old Nokia instead, with no TV and no tablet in the cabin, and builds the product on the three-day effect: day one is adjustment, and the benefit arrives on days two and three.

Here is what the four Georgian programmes actually do:

| Programme | Device collected | Returned | Emergency line | Silence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Glamping Tago detox week | Phone, laptop, tablet, smartwatch, into a pouch and a safe | At the closing circle, or on request at any time | Camp reception, +995 555 56 24 83, on site all week | No. Talking is the point |
| Metta.Land | All electronic and media devices, at the opening ceremony | At the closing ceremony on the last day | A manager's number to leave with family | Yes, including gestures, notes and eye contact |
| Ten-day Vipassana | All devices, deposited with management | On the last day | Family contacts the management | Yes, total, for ten days |
| Zen sesshin, Tsikhisdziri | Gadgets set aside for the duration | End of the sesshin | Organiser's phone | Between practice sessions |

Three questions to ask before you pay:

- Where exactly is my phone during the week, and who holds the key?
- What number do I give my family, and who answers it at 03:00?
- What happens if I need to make one call? Is that a conversation or a confrontation?

At Glamping Tago's week the answer to all three is written on the [event page](https://digital-detox.glampingtago.ge/), which is the standard to hold every other organiser to.

## How do you tell a real detox retreat from a sightseeing tour with the word retreat on it?

Read the itinerary, not the headline. A week that moves hotel every second night, runs a wine tasting and drives to three monasteries is a tour. A week that stays in one place, repeats the same shape every day and says out loud what happens to your phone is a retreat.

Six tests that sort them in about a minute:

1. **Does the page name the venue?** A retreat you can look up on a map, read reviews of and phone is a different proposition from a "venue confirmed after booking".
2. **Does it say what happens to devices?** Silence about the phone means there is no rule. The good pages write the rule out in full.
3. **How many beds?** Ten to thirty is a group. A hundred is a hotel programme.
4. **Who leads it, and what have they done?** A named psychologist, teacher or monastic with a history beats "our team of experts".
5. **What does the day look like, hour by hour?** A real programme publishes the timetable. A tour publishes photographs.
6. **What happens if you cancel?** A clear deadline and a refund rule is a sign of an operation that has run this before.

Real Georgian weeks that fail the device test and are honest about it are worth naming, because they are good at what they are. [My Yogic Adventure](https://myyogicadventure.com/embody-your-yoga-yoga-and-meditation-retreat/) runs a yoga week in Lakhushdi in Upper Svaneti, a short drive from Mestia: 8 to 15 August 2026, seven nights half board at EUR 700 in a triple, EUR 800 twin and EUR 950 single, yoga twice a day on a meadow under Mount Ushba, all meals vegetarian, retreats since 2015. [Soul & Sun Yoga](https://www.soulandsunyoga.com/adventure-trip-georgia_en) bases its Caucasus week in the mountain village of Mazeri, with day hikes from one guesthouse, a day in Ushguli and one stretch of a hike walked in silence; the 2026 trip ran 26 September to 3 October and the next dates are open to enquiry. Both are proper holidays. Neither touches your phone.

## What does a digital detox week in Georgia cost in 2026?

Between nothing and EUR 1,190 for the programme itself. A ten-day Vipassana course costs nothing at all. A four-day Zen sesshin costs 300 GEL. A six-night hosted week in the mountains runs EUR 540 to EUR 1,190 depending on the date and the bed, and most people land between EUR 600 and EUR 1,300 all in once flights and one transfer are counted.

## How long does it take to actually switch off, and is a weekend enough?

Three days is the floor, a week is better, and the change that lasts happens after you get home. Research by [the University of Greenwich](https://www.gre.ac.uk/articles/public-relations/greenwich-research-revelas-the-emotional-rollercoaster-of-digital-detox) with the University of East Anglia and Auckland University of Technology followed 24 travellers from seven countries on technology-free trips to 17 countries and found the same arc in many of them: withdrawal that people compared to giving up smoking or drinking, then anxiety and frustration, then acceptance, enjoyment and a feeling of liberation. Several learned to navigate with paper maps and to ask strangers for directions, and said that turned into the highlight of the trip. Guests here go restless for about 24 hours and settle by 48.

The strongest single number in the field comes from a randomised trial, not from a retreat brochure. In [a 2025 study in PNAS Nexus](https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250219/Blocking-mobile-internet-for-two-weeks-improves-mental-health-and-well-being.aspx), 467 participants with an average age of 32 blocked mobile internet on their phones for two weeks while calls and texts kept working. 91% improved on at least one of mental health, well-being and sustained attention, 71% reported better mental health than before, and the average fall in depression symptoms was larger than the average reported in antidepressant trials. The freed time went into hobbies, face-to-face company, exercise, time outdoors and sleep.

The same study carries the number no retreat page quotes: only 57% of the people who signed up actually installed the blocking app, and only about a quarter stayed off mobile internet for the full two weeks. Intending to switch off and managing it are two different problems, which is the strongest practical argument for paying someone else to hold the boundary for a week.

Be honest about the limits too. Kostadin Kushlev, the psychologist who ran that experiment, [writes in Psyche](https://psyche.co/ideas/curious-about-a-digital-detox-heres-what-you-should-know) that there is no evidence that brief and total digital detoxes work, that the measured benefits come from cutting one app or the phone itself over a week to a month, and that testimonials from people who paid a lot for a retreat are biased by exactly that. In a large German experiment, people who cut their smartphone use to one hour a day for a week improved as much as people who gave the phone up entirely, and the gains lasted longer in the reduction group. A [2024 review](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/digital-detox) found that detoxes significantly reduce depressive symptoms, with no significant effect on stress, life satisfaction or overall well-being.

The good news in the same article is that a week is a meaningful unit: practising a detox for as little as a week can have benefits for months afterwards, and two weeks off mobile internet improved sustained attention by roughly what you would expect from reversing ten years of cognitive decline. Four days in nature without media also raised performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50% in [a 2012 PLOS ONE study](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0051474) of hikers. That is roughly the shape of what people report here: sleep, attention and perspective come back. Keeping them is a job for the month after.

> **Good to know:** The [Data Detox Kit](https://datadetoxkit.org/ka/wellbeing/essentials/), published in Georgian among other languages, puts the average at 2,600 screen touches a day. A review of the phone habits of nearly a million people between 2012 and 2022, [reported by UCLA Health](https://www.uclahealth.org/news/article/considering-digital-detox-why-its-good-idea-and-what-know), puts the global prevalence of problematic smartphone use at 37.1% and rising.

## When is the best time of year for a screen-free week in the Georgian mountains?

Late September and October, with June to early September as the warm, busy alternative. Mountain camps in Adjara are seasonal: Glamping Tago runs from 1 April to the end of October and closes for winter, so the detox week is the closing week of the season.

| Month | What the mountains are like | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| April | Cool and green, camps opening, snow still on the high passes | Low prices, almost nobody about |
| May | Long days, flowers, rain showers | Hiking, the first warm evenings |
| June | Warm days, cold nights, the Goderdzi pass clear of snow | Long light, full programmes |
| July - August | Warmest and busiest, Batumi crowded and hot | Escaping the coast |
| September | Highs falling from 22C to 18C in Khulo, lows 12C to 8C | The most comfortable retreat month |
| October | Highs 18C to 12C, lows 7C to 3C, golden forests, rain likely, early snow possible | Autumn detox weeks and silence |
| November | Colder still, snowfall building through the month | Tbilisi-based courses only |
| December - March | Mountain camps closed, the Goderdzi pass shut in heavy snow | Tbilisi and Bakuriani courses |

Those Khulo figures come from the Weatherspark [September](https://weatherspark.com/m/102427/9/Average-Weather-in-September-in-Khulo-Georgia) and [October](https://weatherspark.com/m/102427/10/Average-Weather-in-October-in-Khulo-Georgia) records for the town at about 900 m. The camp sits roughly 300 m higher, so the nights there run colder than the town forecast says.

If you are weighing the coast against the mountains: [October in Batumi](https://weatherspark.com/m/102084/10/Average-Weather-in-October-in-Batumi-Georgia) means highs falling from 22C to 18C and a wet-day chance rising from 30% to 38%. [Bakuriani in the same month](https://weatherspark.com/m/102848/10/Average-Weather-in-October-in-Bakuriani-Georgia) runs highs of 16C to 9C and lows of 4C to -1C, with the 31-day snowfall average climbing to about 11 cm by the end, so the 20-31 October Vipassana course sits in the first snow.

> **Tip:** A forecast for Khulo is not a forecast for a camp 300 m higher up the valley, and weather apps only know the town. Pack thermals, a fleece, a warm jacket, a waterproof shell, waterproof boots, a hat and gloves and a head torch for any week in the mountains after mid-September, and pack the rain shell even in August.

## How do you get to a mountain retreat in Adjara from Batumi, Kutaisi or Tbilisi?

Fly to Batumi. It is the closest airport to the Adjara mountains, 87.4 km from Village Tago, and the drive takes about 2.5 hours. Kutaisi and Tbilisi both work and simply add hours.

1. **From Batumi by public transport.** A marshrutka from the old Batumi bus station at 1 Mayakovsky Street runs to Khulo about every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 20:00, takes about 2h30 and costs around 10 GEL, paid to the driver in cash. The window sign reads ბათუმი - ხულო. From Khulo a 4x4 taxi covers the last 7.7 km to Tago in 30 to 35 minutes for 75 GEL per car, up to four people; the taxis wait at the cable car station, or reception sends one when you call or message +995 555 56 24 83 on WhatsApp.
2. **From Batumi door to door.** A private 4x4 transfer is 265 GEL per car for up to four people, about 2.5 hours.
3. **From Kutaisi.** 465 GEL per car and about 5h30 direct. By public transport, take the marshrutka from Kutaisi bus station to Batumi (3 hours, 20 GEL, hourly 08:00 to 18:00) and continue from there.
4. **From Tbilisi.** 925 GEL per car and about 8h30 direct. By train, [Georgian Railway](https://www.railway.ge/en/traffic-general-schedule/) runs two Stadler KISS pairs a day to Batumi: train 802 leaves Tbilisi at 08:00 and arrives 13:35, train 804 leaves 17:10 and arrives 22:45, a ride of about 5h35. Coming back, 801 runs 16:30 to 21:55 and 803 runs 08:00 to 13:17.
5. **From Akhaltsikhe** over the Goderdzi pass: 360 GEL per car and about 4h30. The pass road is asphalt almost the whole way, with a few unfinished kilometres near Bodzauri that a normal car handles in dry weather, and it closes in heavy snow in winter.

Driving yourself, there are two ways up. The main road follows the Adjaristsqali through Keda at 38 to 40 km, the Dandalo arch bridge at 55 km and Shuakhevi at 65 km to Khulo at 85 km, all asphalt, then turns off for the steep 4x4 climb to Tago. The easier alternative leaves the Batumi-Akhaltsikhe road at Zamleti, 4.7 km before Khulo, and runs up the Skhalta valley through Cheri and Dzmagula to Tago. Zamleti is on the Batumi to Tago drive rather than a detour from it, and the Skhalta road suits a normal car.

> **Watch out:** Four things catch people out on this road. The last climb to Tago needs a real four-wheel drive, and Georgian rental jeeps often are not one. Map apps route this valley badly, so use [Organic Maps](https://organicmaps.app/) or [Maps.me](https://maps.me/) and follow the wooden Glamping Tago signs. The village of Chao is 1.6 km from the camp in a straight line but 12.1 km and 19 minutes by road, and map apps send people there constantly. And the Khulo-Tago cable car, which older guides still describe as running, is closed: the managing company [states](https://batumelebi.netgazeti.ge/news/594082/) that the 1985 line could not be restored safely, and the Adjara 2026 budget carries 200,000 GEL only for the pre-project study of a replacement.

Full directions, including the Skhalta valley route and what to do if your car is not a 4x4, are on [how to get to Glamping Tago](/how-to-get-to-glamping-tago). Khulo is the last town with shops and a petrol station before the high valleys, and it has a tourist information centre open 09:00 to 19:00 every day.

> **Khulo tourist information centre** (29 M. Abashidze Street, Khulo (Adjara))
> The official place in Khulo to ask about walks, shelters and road conditions, run by the regional tourism agency. A service point rather than a rated business: its Google entry carries no reviews.
> Season: Open 09:00-19:00, every day
> [website](https://visitbatumi.com/) · phone +995 577 90 90 15 · [map](https://www.google.com/maps/place/?q=place_id:ChIJq-nG6tdPXUAR6FRt2vWZuTs)

For a Vipassana course in Bakuriani, the route is different. [Direct marshrutkas](https://fstarentcar.com/blog/tbilisi-to-bakuriani-ski-resort-transport-guide/) leave Tbilisi's Didube terminal at least four times a day, including 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00, for 15 GEL in 3.5 to 4 hours. Going via Borjomi, vans run hourly from Didube between 08:00 and 19:00 for 12 GEL in about 2.5 hours, then Borjomi to Bakuriani vans at 08:30, 09:00, 10:30, 12:15, 15:00 and 16:30 for 3 GEL in 45 minutes. Coming back, direct vans leave Bakuriani bus station nine times a day between 08:00 and 17:00 for 15 GEL. By road it is 182.9 km and about three hours from Tbilisi, and 285.3 km and about four and a half hours from Batumi. Winter tyres are mandatory on the Borjomi to Bakuriani road, and the [Roads Department](https://georoad.gov.ge/en) answers road closures on +995 32 231 30 76.

## Where else in Adjara and Georgia can you join or hold a quiet week?

If none of the four programmes fits your calendar, build the week yourself around a place that is quiet by geography. The first three beds below are in our own Khulo valley. Everything after them sits in a different Adjaran valley, so each one is its own trip out of Batumi rather than a stop on the way anywhere.

### Glamping Tago, Village Tago, Khulo

Our own camp, and the base the rest of this guide is written from. 12 Lotus Belle tents for two and a nine-bed dome dormitory at 1,200 m, 33 beds in total, a yoga dome and an outdoor shala, a wood-fired sauna tent, free for staying guests including retreat groups, with a cold plunge, lit every evening from 20:00 to 22:00, and morning yoga included with any stay. Two shower blocks with hot water, and bedding and towels provided. Open 1 April to the end of October. Outside the detox week nothing is confiscated, so a self-made quiet week here is a rule you set yourself, helped by the fact that the nearest thing to a distraction is the river. Today's prices are on [the booking engine](https://glampingtago.ge/book?from=blog_text).

### The village houses in Tago

Seven families in the village keep rooms for guests: 27 rooms, 64 beds and about 60 camping spots, all three to ten minutes on foot from the camp, at [150 GEL per room per night](https://glampingtago.ge/local-guesthouses). Bathrooms are usually shared and every house has a balcony or a terrace. This is the cheapest way to spend a week in the same valley, and the closest thing in Adjara to living in a mountain village rather than visiting one.

### Hotel Khulo Inn, Khulo

The best-rated bed in Khulo town, 7.7 km below the camp at 843 m, for a night at the road head before the 4x4 up or for a self-made quiet week with shops within walking distance. It is a family-run hotel in a traditional Adjaran wooden house, and guests single out the homemade breakfast, the mountain view from the balcony and the quiet.

Three more places come up whenever people ask where to spend a quiet week near Batumi, and each deserves an honest note. [Chateau Milisi](https://chateaumilisi.ge/), the four-star in Keda used by [a Russian-language women's spa weekend](https://www.strelkovskaya.com/zhenskij-retrit-v-gorax-gruziidikaya/), rates 4.3 from 197 reviews with rooms from US$49 and suites at US$120, a pool, a Finnish sauna and a wine cellar; it is a conference and events hotel, not a retreat. [Calypso Kvariati](https://www.instagram.com/calypso_yoga/) is a small sea-view yoga hotel 19 km from Batumi with no device rule. Where you eat in our valley is a short list. [Yurtalicious](https://glampingtago.ge/restaurant), the vegetarian yurt restaurant at the camp, serves a 32 GEL breakfast buffet from 09:00 to 11:00, an a la carte lunch from 13:00 to 16:00 and a 37 GEL dinner buffet from 19:00 to 21:00, cooked fresh each morning by women from the village. Beyond that, Khulo town has restaurants, pubs and the last proper grocery shops before the pass.

### Holding your own quiet week at the camp

If you teach, coach or run a team and want to hold the week rather than join one, the camp takes whole-property bookings for 12 to 33 people, with a wooden shala on a sprung floor, mats, blocks, bolsters and a speaker, a 38 m2 geodesic yoga dome and a 138 m2 outdoor platform, and three meals a day built around your group by our kitchen. It has hosted retreats since 2018, and visiting organisers keep coming back: [Prague Yoga Collective](https://www.pragueyogacollective.com/glamping-georgia-26) ran its glamping yoga retreat here for the third year in 2026, on 23-30 August and 9-16 September. Terms and dates are on [our retreats page](/retreats) and at [retreat.glampingtago.ge](https://retreat.glampingtago.ge/). A guided hike with one of our guides starts at [150 GEL](/tours). A group that wants a device rule of its own gets the same safe and the same reception line we use on the detox week.

## How do you do it yourself, without a retreat, and stay reachable in an emergency?

Choose a place where the signal runs out, agree one rule before you leave, and set up a way for people to reach you that does not involve your phone. That last part is what separates a good solo week from a worrying one.

**Pick the geography.** [Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park](https://nationalparks.ge/en/site/borjomi-kharagaulinp) is the easiest version: 104,099 hectares, 12 marked trails, free entry, and [tariffs](https://apa.gov.ge/en/eco-tourism/servisebi-da-tarifebi/borjom-xaragaulis-daculi-teritoriebi) of 5 GEL a camp place, 20 GEL a bed in a tourist shelter and 25 GEL at the Marelisi hotel. Register at a visitor centre before you walk in. [Kintrishi Protected Areas](https://apa.gov.ge/en/eco-tourism/servisebi-da-tarifebi/kintrishis-daculi-teritoriebi) near Kobuleti charge 5 GEL a camp place and 15 GEL for the tourist shelter in Tskhemvani; the Tamar arch bridge and box-tree route runs all year and the Yew and Lake Tbikeli route from April to November. [Mtirala National Park](https://apa.gov.ge/en/eco-tourism/servisebi-da-tarifebi/mtiralas-erovnuli-parki) charges 20 GEL for a shelter bed and 5 GEL for a tent place, with its season from May to October.

The extreme version is Tusheti, reached by [one unpaved road](https://thegeorgianguide.com/road-trips/tusheti-road-guide/) over the Abano pass at 2,826 m. The road opened on 20 June in 2026 and normally closes in the second half of October or early November. There is no phone signal for most of it and no fuel beyond Alvani or Telavi, and rental firms ban their cars from the route outright, so the way in is a seat in a local 4x4 from Kvemo Alvani: 100 to 120 GEL per person, 3.5 to 4 hours, booked through your guesthouse.

**Get the right SIM, then choose not to use it.** Magti is the network that holds up in the Georgian mountains, and it is our own answer to the question guests ask most before they come. Crowdsourced measurements on [lte.ge](https://lte.ge/?lang=en&network=5g) put Magticom first on every measure: 101.2 Mbps average download against 41.7 for Geocell and 28.8 for Cellfie, and a signal rated poor at 35% of measured points against 91% for Geocell. A SIM needs a passport and takes about ten minutes. [Magti](https://www.magticom.ge/en/home/kvelaferiulimito) sells unlimited packages at 12 GEL for 7 days and 45 GEL for 30. A travel eSIM roams onto whichever local network the deal is struck with, which is often the weaker one.

**Set up the emergency line before you go quiet.** 112 is the single number for police, fire, ambulance and rescue, run by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. [It answers around the clock](https://georgiaguidebook.com/planning/is-georgia-safe/), free, from a phone with no SIM card or a negative balance, but only where a Georgian network reaches, and a deep valley may have none. The free [112 Georgia app](https://112.gov.ge/?page_id=22696&lang=en) attaches your GPS coordinates to the call, carries a text chat for when you cannot speak and a silent SOS button, and sends the coordinates by SMS if your data runs out. It works in Georgian, English, Russian, Armenian and Azerbaijani. Be realistic about what arrives: the [FCDO](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/georgia/safety-and-security) states plainly that emergency response for hiking, skiing and adventure travel may be limited and that your insurance has to cover the activity. Check whether your policy includes search and rescue, helicopter included, because some Georgian-minimum policies do not.

**Download the maps before you leave the coast.** [Organic Maps](https://organicmaps.app/) works with no internet at all. Download the Georgia map while you still have a signal, not when you are standing at a junction above Khulo.

**Write the rule down.** Leave the phone with a host, in a bag, in the car, and give one number home: the guesthouse landline, the host's mobile, the number of whoever you are travelling with. You do not have to go all the way: in [a 2019 field experiment with 237 people](https://www.kushlev.com/s/2019-Fitz-Kushlev-etal-2019.pdf), receiving notifications in three batches a day instead of continuously left people more attentive, more productive, in a better mood and less stressed, while switching notifications off entirely did not. If the whole-phone version feels absurd, the three-batches version has good evidence behind it.

## How do you book a digital detox week in Georgia, step by step?

1. **Pick the format first, not the place.** A hosted group week, a silent course and a solo village week are three different holidays. Only the first two hold the boundary for you.
2. **Check the dates against the season.** Mountain camps in Adjara run April to the end of October. Bakuriani and Tbilisi courses run through the winter.
3. **Confirm the device policy in writing** before you pay anything, especially with hotels and general wellness retreats. Ask where the phone is stored and who can hand it back.
4. **Book the week, then the flights.** A fixed-arrival week like 26 October to 1 November has exactly one arrival day, and a cheap flight landing on Tuesday is not a bargain.
5. **Apply early for the free options.** A Vipassana application can take two weeks to answer, both October courses have wait lists on at least one side, and places are held only after you confirm.
6. **Book two to six months ahead for autumn dates,** and earlier for June to September, when the Adjara camps fill with visiting groups. Early tiers usually close four to eight weeks before the start.
7. **Pay the deposit.** The Glamping Tago week takes a 30% prepayment with the rest paid on arrival, and refunds in full if you cancel at least two weeks before the start.
8. **Arrange the transfer with the venue,** not with a taxi app. App drivers reach Khulo in about two hours for up to 175 GEL but cannot reach Tago, and they often ask for more than the app price because they have no return fare. Send your flight details and the camp books the car and matches guests arriving at the same time.
9. **Tell your people in advance** which number reaches you and that you will not read messages for a week. Set the out-of-office before you leave home, not from the bus.

## What do people get wrong about a detox week here?

- **They keep the phone "just for photos".** It works for a day. Bring a real camera or a browserless e-reader instead. At our week anything with a SIM, Wi-Fi or apps goes in the box, and the camp lends cameras to anyone who wants one.
- **They book the coast in October.** Batumi in autumn is rain and closing cafes. The mountains in October are the best week of the year.
- **They pack for a beach holiday.** Nights near 2,000 m are cold in August and close to freezing in late October. Thermals, a warm jacket, a rain shell, waterproof boots.
- **They arrive on the wrong day.** A week built as one arc opens with a welcome circle. Missing it means arriving as a stranger on Tuesday.
- **They expect a spa.** Shared shower blocks, a sauna in a tent, a vegetarian kitchen and a mountain road. If you want a massage table and room service, book a resort.
- **They plan a stop that is not on the way.** Eco House Merisi adds 23.2 km and 38 minutes to the Batumi-Tago drive, Chateau Milisi adds 12.8 km and 27 minutes, Mtirala House adds 36 km and 45 minutes. Each is its own trip, not a coffee stop.
- **They count on the cable car.** The Khulo-Tago line is out of service and a replacement is at the pre-project stage.
- **They expect the mountain to do the work.** Glamping Tago has Starlink and mobile coverage. A week without screens here is a decision, and that is exactly why the box exists.
- **They confuse a detox with treatment.** A week helps with tiredness, sleep and perspective. It does not replace care for a clinical condition.

## Is a digital detox retreat the same as burnout treatment?

No. A hosted week is psychoeducational: talks and group sessions about stress, sleep, attention and habits, plus movement, food and rest. That is genuinely useful when you are exhausted and cannot think straight, and it is what most people who work in front of a screen actually need. It is not clinical care, and a good organiser says so before taking your deposit.

The distinction is not just marketing. The [World Health Organization](https://www.who.int/news/item/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases) classifies burn-out in ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition: a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, with three dimensions of energy depletion, mental distance from the job, and reduced professional efficacy. The WHO also estimates that [12 billion working days](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/mental-health-at-work) are lost every year to depression and anxiety, at about US$1 trillion a year in lost productivity.

The [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/feelings-and-symptoms/stress/) puts the threshold simply: see a doctor if you are struggling to cope with stress or if the things you are trying yourself are not helping, and get urgent help if you have harmed yourself. If any of that fits, book the appointment first and the week second.

Georgia does have a clinically framed option. [Bioli Wellness Resort](https://bioli.ge/en/programs/mental-detox) in Kojori, 15.4 km and about 27 minutes above Tbilisi at 1,151 m, runs a doctor-led Mental Detox programme for mental fatigue, stress and burnout: wellness coaching, a consultation with the chief doctor, spectrometry, a heart rate variability test, psychotherapy, yoga, breathing therapy, forest walks and massage over three days at US$950. It has no device rule, which is why it belongs in this section rather than in the phone-free list.

For talking to someone in English, [It's Complicated](https://complicated.life/find-a-therapist/tbilisi) lists 15 vetted therapists in Tbilisi, online and in person, and [TherapyRoute](https://www.therapyroute.com/therapists/georgia/tbilisi) lists practitioners working in English and Georgian whose stated specialisms include stress and burnout. Both state plainly that they are not for a crisis. In a crisis in Georgia, 112 is the emergency number, 111 is the child assistance hotline and 116 006 is the hotline for victims of violence.

## The Digital Detox & Mental Health Week at Glamping Tago

We run one phone-free week a year in Village Tago, high in the Khulo valley of mountainous Adjara at 1,200 m, roughly 2.5 hours from Batumi. In 2026 it runs from Monday 26 October to Sunday 1 November, six nights, and everyone starts together on Monday because the week is built as one arc. Most stay the whole week; 4 or 5 nights is possible too.

At arrival your phone, laptop, tablet and smartwatch go into a labelled pouch and into a safe, and come back at the closing circle. A basic e-reader without a browser and a simple camera stay with you, the tents have sockets to charge them, and the camp lends digital and film cameras. If something serious comes up you can ask a host for your phone at any time, and reception stays reachable on +995 555 56 24 83 all week, so family or colleagues always have a way through.

The days are simple: morning meditation at 08:30, yoga at 09:15, a psychological talk and a group circle before lunch, hikes and free time in the afternoon, evening meditation, then the sauna tent, the ice bath and the campfire. Three fresh vegetarian meals a day, 33 places, hosted by Jonas and Nikita.

The honest limits: two shared shower blocks, a fully vegetarian kitchen, a 4x4 mountain road for the last 35 minutes, and autumn nights close to freezing. Transfers are arranged separately and paid on top, and we match guests arriving at the same time into one car.

## FAQ

**Is this about Georgia the country or the US state?**

The country in the Caucasus, between the Black Sea and Russia, with Tbilisi as its capital and Batumi on the coast. Every programme in this guide is there, from Tsikhisdziri on the Adjara coast to Bakuriani in the centre of the country. The big retreat marketplaces file the American state under the same name, so check the town, not the country, before you book a flight.

**Which retreats in Georgia actually take your phone away?**

Four. The Digital Detox & Mental Health Week at Glamping Tago collects phones, laptops, tablets and smartwatches at arrival and locks them in a safe for six nights. The Metta.Land four-night course takes all electronic and media devices at the opening ceremony. A ten-day Vipassana course deposits devices with management and allows no calls, messages or visitors at all. The Georgian Sangha Zen sesshin in Tsikhisdziri has participants set gadgets aside for the duration. Everything else sold here as a detox leaves the discipline to you.

**How much does a week without a phone cost in Georgia?**

From nothing to EUR 1,190 for the programme. A ten-day Vipassana course is free, including food and accommodation, and runs on donations from people who have already sat a course. A four-day Zen sesshin in Tsikhisdziri is 300 GEL with the bed and every meal included. Metta.Land is EUR 260 in shared costs plus a donation for the teaching. A six-night hosted week at Glamping Tago is EUR 600 for a dorm bed, EUR 810 for a bed in a shared tent and EUR 1,190 for a private tent, or 10% less if booked by 12 October 2026 (the 30% early bird ended on 2 October).

**Can my family reach me if my phone is locked away?**

At Glamping Tago, yes. The team lives on site and reception stays reachable on +995 555 56 24 83, including on WhatsApp, so you can give your family a number that is answered; if something serious comes up you can ask a host for your own device at any time. Metta.Land gives you a manager's number for the same purpose. On a ten-day Vipassana course the rule is stricter: no outside communication at all, and a relative in an emergency contacts the management directly.

**Do these retreats work, or is a digital detox just a trend?**

The reliable evidence is for cutting screen time rather than for a single week away. In a 2025 randomised trial with 467 participants, blocking mobile internet for two weeks improved mental health, well-being or sustained attention for 91% of them, and a German study found that cutting a phone to one hour a day worked as well as giving it up entirely, with gains that lasted longer. A 2024 review found a real drop in depressive symptoms and no significant effect on stress or life satisfaction. A week in the mountains is best understood as the reset and the place where you write the rules you will keep at home.

**When is the best month for a screen-free week in the Georgian mountains?**

Late September and October. Highs in Khulo fall from 22C to 18C through September and from 18C to 12C through October, nights drop to 3C by the end of the month, the forests turn gold and the crowds have gone. June to August are warm but busy. Mountain camps in Adjara are seasonal and Glamping Tago runs 1 April to the end of October, so from November to March you are looking at courses in Bakuriani or Tbilisi.

**How do I get from Batumi to a retreat in the Adjara mountains?**

A marshrutka from the old Batumi bus station at 1 Mayakovsky Street runs to Khulo about every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 20:00, takes about 2h30 and costs around 10 GEL in cash. From Khulo a 4x4 taxi covers the last 7.7 km to Tago in 30 to 35 minutes for 75 GEL per car for up to four people. A private 4x4 transfer door to door from Batumi is 265 GEL per car. The Khulo-Tago cable car is out of service, and map apps route this valley badly, so use Organic Maps or Maps.me.

**Do I need a 4x4, and can I just drive up myself?**

The last climb from Khulo to Tago needs a real four-wheel drive, and Georgian rental jeeps often are not one. Without a proper 4x4, park in Khulo centre and take the camp taxi. The easier alternative leaves the Batumi-Akhaltsikhe road at Zamleti, 4.7 km before Khulo, and runs up the Skhalta valley through Cheri and Dzmagula, which suits a normal car. Coming from the east, the Goderdzi pass road is asphalt almost the whole way, with a few unfinished kilometres near Bodzauri that a normal car handles in dry weather, and it closes in heavy snow.

**What happens if it rains or snows during the week?**

The week moves under a roof. At Glamping Tago the circles, meditation and talks happen under cover, the tents have heating and wood stoves, the sauna runs every evening and there are board games, tea and books; if snow comes, the long hike is swapped for a snow walk. Rain is likely at some point in late October and early snow is possible, which is why the packing list starts with a waterproof shell and waterproof boots.

**Do I need a visa and travel insurance for a retreat in Georgia?**

Citizens of the countries on Georgia's visa-free list may enter and stay for one full year. Since 1 January 2026, Resolution No. 602 also requires health and accident insurance covering at least 30,000 GEL for the whole stay, on paper or on a screen, in Georgian or English, and the police may check it at the border. If you plan to hike, confirm that your policy covers the activity and includes search and rescue.

**Is a digital detox week the same as burnout treatment?**

No. The WHO classifies burn-out in ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, and a hosted week is psychoeducational: talks and circles on stress, sleep, attention and habits, plus movement, food and rest. That helps when you are exhausted, but it is not clinical care. Georgia does have a doctor-led alternative in the three-day Mental Detox programme at Bioli in Kojori, at US$950, which has no device rule. If stress will not lift or comes with panic, bad sleep or thoughts of self-harm, see a doctor first.
